Amnesia

I heard an unfamiliar alarm go off suddenly and in an instant I was sitting upright on my bed. I didn't bother opening my eyes as I tried to hit the snooze button. I had never been so groggy in the morning, it felt as if I had overdosed on sleeping meds. After my failed attempts at making the alarm shut up, I forced my eyes open to see a woman bursting through the door with an angry look. Then finally my brain registered her as my mom.
"What are you doing!? Wake up! School starts in 5 minutes!! You already missed the darn bus so guess who's walking!?" My mom wailed. I glanced over at the clock and see it's half past seven. Then I sat up and stared at my mom with tired and confused eyes. Unsure whether to trust the clock or my mom, I simply slid out from under my comfortable cocoon of blankets and onto the hardwood floor of our small apartment building.
"Mooooom," I groaned. "It's only 7:30, I have an hour to catch the bus!"  My mom gave me an unpleased look and began tapping her foot impatiently as she crossed her arms. "Excuse me? Sadie, how many times have I told you that school here starts at eight!?"
"What do you mean, mom? School starts at nine... Right?" I ask, so confused and sure I'm forgetting something. That's when I begin to take in my surroundings and for the first time I realize, I'm on the floor of a strange room. That is, the hardwood floor of a strange room. My room has carpet, so...
My mom let out a loud sigh, pulling me away from my thoughts. She walked over and sat herself in front of me. "Sadie, please don't tell me you forgot. How is it that you forget the most important things at the only times they're needed?" She placed her hands on her head, shaking it slowly in disbelief.
"I forgot something again?" I stupidly blurted.
"Yes, Sadie. We moved, remember?"
"No... Wait, maybe..." In a quick blur, the images of my parents fighting, a lawyer and moving truck suddenly flash into my thoughts. "Oh, yeah I do remember!"
"Then hurry up and get ready, you can eat on the way to school." Mom decided as she got up and left, closing the door behind her.
I forced myslef to stand and let out a loud yawn. I looked around for my dresser but instead saw an old looking wardrobe. The shelves in the corner were covered in dust and the bed looked ancient. The walls were an eerie stained yellow colour with large haunting windows on one side of the room.
I opened the dusty wardrobe to find my clothes neatly hung up. I looked through them and pulled out my old grey sweatshirt and grabbed a simple pair of jeans from the shelf. After quickly changing into the comfortable clothes, I searched through some of the moving boxes still full in the corner to find my backpack. I also pulled out my binder and tossed it on my bed. After my mom passed me an apple for lunch, I grabbed my quick breakfast, ran outside and began jogging down the street. I gobbled down my toast quickly and slowed my pace to a speed walk.
"Oh no..." I mumbled to myself as I stopped in my tracks. "Where the hell is this school..? And where am I? Is this downtown?"  I decided to turn back and find out where exactly I should be going but... I got lost...
It was as if the roads were constantly changing and switching around behind my back.
I stopped to think, I'm lost in who knows where and late for school with no idea where it even is. Sounds fun. I began my search by strolling past a few shops to see if I recognized any of them. Nope, but I did notice that the shops were newer and the streets seemed recently paved. No one else was wandering around and all the shops were closed. It seemed like the whole world was asleep, but that couldn't be the case. I eventually found myself at a large map, though to my dismay none of it was in English. I blinked twice and studied the writing, it wasn't French nor Spanish.
I sighed, a foreign language, perfect. This goes great with my current situation.
Staring at the map I saw a large building that in a way resembled an avergae public school. It had a park right next to it and what I believed to be a picture of children. Looking around I found a street sign and matched it with one on the map to see where I was. Not too far, but it would still be a long walk.
I pulled out my phone and snapped a pic of the section on the map I needed before spinning on my heel to begin my dreadful walk. It was a little freaky that this place seemed abandoned, especially because it looked brand new.
