Why do I have to get assigned to such a sweet girl?

Her bright smile, her positive personality, her innocent face... Everything!
It's all making me nuts!

--------------------†--------------------

My name is Nathaniel. I am an angel, or to what people commonly known as a "Guardian Angel".
There are many angels around the world with different missions and tasks; some send messages, some fights of the evil, some advises the lower ranks, and some protects. The latter was one of my job; to protect the people who are asked to be and deserves to be.
It is really simple and quick. Because to us, a year could be a minute and an hour could be a second.

One day, I was called by the angel who orders it all... Michael; the Archangel.
He said that he needed me to protect a certain girl from harms way. I looked down to the earth and Michael pointed at a little girl no less than six years old. She sat alone on the swings as she happily played with her teddy bear.
"Her name is Miracle," Michael said "From now on, she will be in your care. Befriend her, test her, protect her. Do your job well." And with that, he left me on my own.

I started to come down from heaven. My wings fluttered gracefully as I descended to the child.
Looking around, I saw how there was no one in sight but little Miracle.
"Teddy, you are my only friend!" She smiled, talking to her stuffed toy. Despite the fact that she had no company, she didn't really seem to mind being alone, much less, she never even thought of it.

I sighed, it was time to do my job.
I hid behind a bush and turned myself to a young boy.
My hair became shorter and my wings disappeared into thin air. I dusted my new clothes and approached the lone girl.
"Hello." I bid, making Miracle's big brown orbs focus on me. Her smile became brighter as she placed her teddy on her side.
"Hi! You look new here! What's your name?" She beamed, tilting her head to the side.
"Uh, yeah... My name's Nathaniel... I live nearby."

"Oh! Really?! I'm Miracle! Let's be good friends, okay?" She quickly announced and took my hand to shake it.
After that meeting, I became her best friend not long after.

That's how this all started... Human by day, Angel by night; nothing more, nothing less...

Miracle grew up to be a charming girl. The sociable type but never liked joining in big crowds. It was always just me and her.
We had our fun and laughs in our days; I would defend her from bullies and comfort her when she's sad; at night, I would watch her sleep and protect her dreams from nightmares.
Sometimes, the enemy would tempt her to do things God would forbid, but Miracle's smart, and I'm always there to help guide her.

Watching her grow slowly was quite entertaining...

But...

As the years pass by, being in human form was getting the best of me.
I started to have things an angel shouldn't have...

Miracle was now sixteen years old, and that was the time I realized...
I have fallen love with her.

But that's not what i'm concerned about.
It's the emotions, illusions. I started to feel; anger, jealousy, hatred, fear. All those humanly things had made me flawed.
It was distracting me from my main objective.
Whenever Miracle would encounter anyone suspicious, I would react violently in the slightest bit of contact. I became more cautious; I cared for her more than I should have. I couldn't control my emotions anymore and Miracle would get concerned.

I couldn't understand what's happening to myself.
I thought about it every night, until the time came when I knew Michael would call again.
He knew that I was having troubles while being human, so he took me out of my job, saying that I needed to be replaced.

Those words scared me. I needed to say goodbye to Miracle...
The next day I met up with her at the park. With a heavy heart, I told her that I was moving away. As expected, Miracle cried heavily and begged me to stay, what I didn't expect is that I'd break myself, I thought that I have prepared.
I had no choice, I needed to move away, and I could only watch her from above.

Time has yet again passed. Miracle's new guardian was trying his best to take care of her, but she wasn't the same as before anymore.
It saddens me to watch her from far away; seeing how my disappearance made her more gloomy and out of this world. It gave a huge affect on her as she is nothing more than an empty shell. My heart cringed at the sight. She was slowly submitting to the enemy!
She sat alone everyday, becoming more violent as she grew older, her emotions became more fragile as the wicked whispered in her ears. Her Angel couldn't help her, for every human was given a free will, and Miracle wont listen to his pleas.

I couldn't take it anymore. I went out to Michael and begged him to give me another chance. He declined, but I know I couldn't give up. I cried and begged, asking why they were doing this.

"Do you really care for the girl this much?" A booming voice said from behind. Knowing who it was, I turned and fell on my knees. "Tell me, how much do you love her?" He said. I hesitated and trembled, but spoke otherwise.

"I love her as much as you do, my Lord. I would give anything to be with her!" I said, trying my best to choke the strange pain that I feel on my throat.
I felt a hand touch my shoulder as I faced the great King before me.

"Then, would you be patient for her? In return, I shall permit what you wish."

After a few moments, I nodded slowly. He then gave me a warm smile and raised his hand. I felt my eyes become heavy, and before I knew it, everything became black...

--------------------†--------------------

"Doctor, he's waking up!"

My eyes fluttered open as I heard sound of voices and footsteps surround me. I looked around to see a group of people in white staring at me with concern plastered on their faces.
"Where am I?" I asked, carefully sitting up from the bed.

...

My name is Nathaniel Strauss, I am 26 years old.
Three years ago I woke up in a hospital. I was told that I had amnesia; I had no recollection of my memories, except for my name and age.
From what the doctors have collected, I was found unconscious near a river. A girl had brought me in and paid for my medical expenses. She would visit me day by day to see how I was.
But a week has passed and I had no visitors since.
When I had recovered, they had me checked out of the ward and I was left out on my own.

I tried to find a job and it led me to be a dish washer at a restaurant. Then I moved from sleeping on the streets to a nice apartment. I shifted jobs from time to time, got promoted at one even. But, while regaining a new life, my mind would set on the girl that saved my life.

I felt the need to find her. But with the lack of information, I didn't know where to start. All I could do is wonder about my past life.

Now back to the present. Today wasn't the most fortunate day for me. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, I didn't get breakfast, I almost got bitten by my neighbor's dog, and I am now running late for work. The busses were taking too long so I had no choice but to run.
When I saw my destination, I headed for the door handle. But before I could even touch it, the door flung open. My foot tripped as I bumped at the exiting customer.

"I'm so sorry!" A soft voice said. My body froze as my eyes stared at the person I bumped into.

My memory quickly formed a familiar name.

It was Miracle.

End.
