The anthem of the Capitol sounds in the night and we all look up to see Glimmer's Face. I look over to Clove and think, What if that had happened to her? I wipe the thought away. I couldn't handle thinking like that. Clove was the only reason I was here. If she were to die then I'd make sure I'd die too.
Marvel distances himself from the rest of us, in his own little world. Clove comes by to sit by me.
"You can't help but feel sorry for him," she says looking at me.
I scoff, "Feeling is what gets you killed in this game, Clove."
Her expression changes and she lowers her voice, "What's the point? Only one of us is going home, one of us has to die if-"
"No! Don't talk like that Clove! If it comes between the two of us, I'm going to make sure it's you that goes home," I say, my voice getting quieter.
She looks away and murmurs, "It won't be home if you're not there."
I look at her and her eyes goes to her hands, "You know I had a token right?"
I was surprised, "No, I didn't."
"It was, that ring that you gave me for my birthday..."
I remembered the one. I got it from a merchant from District One. It was a small diamond band that I new she'd like from the moment I saw it. "Yeah," I say, "Where is it?"
I see a tear go down her cheek, "They wouldn't let me take it in here, they said it would give me an advantage in hand to hand combat."
My blood boiled. Didn't they realised that it meant something to her? Sometimes I wanted to burn the Capitol to the ground.
Clove's tears wouldn't stop and it made me feel useless. "Hey, stop that, it'll be okay." I say pulling her into my arms.
"I'm sorry Cat," she sobs into my shoulder. I know the whole Capitol is watching us right now, and I don't care. It doesn't matter because either one or both of us will be dead in the end of this game.
