It's my birthday so as a gift to me please comment and vote!
Watching the television screen in the lobby of where I worked, I waited to spot the next job I would take on. A face popped onto the screen: a girl with silky, long, black hair, sparkling blue eyes, and a smile that could charm any man. The name next to it said Melanie Heather. In the same instant, almost half of the people who were standing around the television started towards the receptionists desk to ask for a slot in the selection of this job. My turn came up, "Melanie Heather" I said quickly.
"Well hello, Kuro. It's not like you to choose such a high-rewarding job; are you sure?" The receptionist asked.
"I'm positive," I said, and looked her straight in the eye. She nodded and said "Okay, that's the last seat for the drawing. Head to room 236 on the second floor. Mr. Sako will be there in fifteen minutes to begin the selection."
As I headed up to room 236, I wondered how many people were trying to get in on this job; it's unheard of for the selection process to run out of seats. Once room 236 was in front of me, I opened the door to find a large room filled with chairs and people occupying most of them. I could see that at the front of the room there were three large bowls with the labels: Demon, Angel, and Reaper. Behind the bowls, there was a television showing a picture of Melanie Heather. Around the room, there were three columns of chairs; about a hundred seats per column. Each seat was filled except for one in the far-right column. The far left column was filled with people wearing dark colors: mostly black; these were the demons. In the middle column, they wore white; these were the angels. The far right was a mixture, not a set color, and these were the reapers, the group I belonged to. Taking my seat in the back, I waited patiently for Mr.Soka to tells everyone the next step.
A few minutes later, Mr. Soka strolled into the room in a black and white suit.
"Everyone, thank you for coming. What I need you to do is to take the pieces of paper that are taped underneath each chair and write your name on each slip. There are a total of five pieces each. Once you are done, come up and drop them into the designated bowl, then return to your seats." I pulled out my five pieces of paper and quickly wrote my name. I didn't want to wait in line, so my handwriting ended up being barely legible. The selection process was basically just a game of chance. It was aggravating at times; newbies had a chance at jobs that were meant for people with more experience, and when people who don't have much experience take on a hard job (like someone who is very indecisive), that demon, angel, or reaper won't get that soul and it will either go to someone else, or the soul will be lost. One day, hopefully, the selection process will change; it's saddening when too many souls are lost.
Waiting for everyone to finish with their papers, I skimmed the column of reapers to see if I knew anybody. Up towards the front, I caught another reaper staring at me. It was a guy with long, blonde hair wearing a kimono from the edo period of japan. Klaus was his name; I had met him once or twice before. Klaus is the top reaper, a step below the boss: the Grim Reaper. Klaus smiled at me and turned back around to face the front.
"Okay, has everyone placed their papers into the bowls?" he paused, "Yes?" "Okay, first I will choose the demon to go." Mr. Soka put his hand into the demon bowl and mixed the papers until he drew one out. "Ryain Road," he placed the paper on the outside of the bowl.
Next was the angels. Imitating the process with the next bowl, he pulled out an angel's name: "Evangeline Rose."
Lastly, he put his hand into the reaper bowl, mixed it, and pulled out a name. Crossing my fingers Mr. Soka said "Kuro Kot." That was me.
I'm lucky I got this one, I am still in trouble with klaus for not getting the previous two souls I was sent to collect.
"Everyone's name that was not called: please leave the room." Mr, Soka announced as others started leaving the room.
Once everyone but the four of us left, Mr.Soka continued: " This woman's name is Melanie Heather. She is 20 years old, lives alone, and only has two best friends. She has a stubborn nature to her, so it's good that there are no newbies here. The reward for returning her soul is 1 million. There are packets of information about her at the front desk on the first floor. Please collect them before you leave. Good luck."
Evangeline and Ryain were the first to stand up and leave the room, and I followed after them. I had never heard of Evangeline before, but Ryain I had. He was a demon that tried to seduce the human to make them go with the him. He was quite popular for being a sleaze. The three of us made our way to the front desk. "So Kuro, I've never heard of you before. Are you any good?" asked Ryain.
"I lost my last two souls to the angels." was all I said.
"Ahahaha! Looks like I may not have much of a problem with you. Although, Miss Rose. You may be a problem." Ryain looked at Evangeline curiously.
"You will be no problem for me. A stubborn girl like that would never fall for your cheap tricks." I gave a slight smile to her comment, knowing she was right. We made it to the desk and collected the papers.
"Alright, see ya guys later," I said.
"Don't be to slow! Or we'll take this soul from you too!" Ryain blurted as he turned and rushed off.
As they walked away, I plopped myself onto one of the couches in the lobby and started skimming the pages: Reno, Nevada. Desk job. Likes sweets. Spends most time alone. After going through the pages, it was time to make my way to her apartment. Standing up, I teleported myself to Reno, Nevada.
Flying in the sky about Reno, I could see the outline of the main city. Looking around, I saw Ryain and Evangeline floating in the sky in their demon and angel forms. Changing into my reaper form, I went and met up with them.
"Why are you guys hanging out here? I would have expected you two to already have introduced yourselves," I asked.
Ryain and Evangeline looked at me. "We would have, but she's not home right now. We were thinking that if you arrived before she came home we would just go together," Evangeline said.
"Ohhhhh! There she is!!! She really is beautiful. Even in person. Can we go now?" Ryain said.
"No, wait for her to get inside. Calm down," Evangeline said.
We watched her make her way into her apartment and waited a minute more, then we teleported inside her apartment where we found ourselves in the living room looking into the kitchen. The three of us watched Melanie make a cup of tea and turn toward us. She didn't seem to see us at first, but when she did, she stared all of us up and down and said: " A demon, an angel, and a reaper. I'm going to die aren't I?"
