*Twelve years ago*
The smell of Mama's very own Sunday dinner ran through my nostrils, making my stomach rumble. The smell was so enticing and rich, i couldn't wait to tuck in. The smell of potatoes, roast beef and vegetables was heavenly.
"Hallie!" Mama called out from the bottom of the stairs making me jump. "Brandon's at the front door!"
"Coming!" I shouted as I carelessly chucked the note pad i was doodling in on the floor and leaped up to dash down the stairs towards the kitchen. At this point the only emotion I was felling was excitement. I had totally forgotten about Mama's yummy food and my hunger.
"You two have become so attached, it's worrying," mother stated as her eyes remained fixated on the potatoes she was peeling.
"He's so much fun though Mum!" I answered. "Plus, It's boring indoors."
My mother just smiled and shook her head. "Off you go then love, make sure you're back before six, dinner will be ready soon."
"I will Mum," I answered racing towards the front door of our 5 bedroom house but as I was halfway out the door, I heard my mother call out to me again.
"...And make sure you guys don't go too far!"
"Yes Mum!" I called out in return, rolling my eyes at how paranoid and over-protective my mother could sometimes be. Grabbing my coat behind the door, i closed the door before my mum could interrupt again.
Brandon Smith and I had been the best of friends since we were seven after meeting him at our local beach, Santona Beach on the day I had moved here to California from Arizona. We clicked instantly after he had noticed me struggling to make sandcastles so approached me and had shown me how to make them.
Since then we would both beg our families to take us to the beach again so we could meet and play some more. We were inseparable ever since and it had become part of our daily routine. Even though we were both now 13, the beach was still our special place but it meant more to us now as we were able to spend time alone together without our parents watching our every move.
Mum, Dad and both Mr and Mrs Smith had gotten pretty close too after spending time together and witnessing how close me and Brandon had become so they would occasionally invite one another round for tea or our mothers would go on shopping spree's together. Santona beach was both mine and Brandon's trademark secret place where we could both block the world out when needed.
"Hey Bran," I greeted him with the biggest smile on my face as I put on my black biker coat over my jeans and white vest top. Brandon was waiting at the doorstep with his skate-board clutched tightly in between both hands. Oh no not again I thought. I'd had enough of skateboarding due to how rubbish I was at it. Brandon was really good at it and whenever he had the chance he would perform some brilliant move on his skateboard that i could never be able to do. "Thought we could head off to the mall?" I suggested as i fiddled with the loose change in my coat pocket.
Brandon looked incredibly nice today. His chestnut brown fringe was swept along his right cheekbone which obscured one of his beady brown eyes. He was wearing his favorite white printed t-shirt and beige shorts alongside his denim converse trainers. Brandon was crazy, why on earth was he wearing shorts on a day like this? It was windy and there was a very big chance it could rain as the dull dark clouds invaded the sky.
"I was actually thinking, maybe we could practice some new moves on my skate board?." Brandon responded like my suggestion was boring and lifeless compared to his.
"But we always play on your skateboard!" I moaned. "Lets try the mall today, come on Bran we ain't been there in a while?"
"Your so stubborn at times Hallie"
