The rain is beating heavily down on my back as I make my way down the street. Everything is so familiar it's like the town hasn't even changed in the last five years I was away. I could see where I was headed. The large house down the end of the street with its warm lights shining through the windows. I pull my hoodie tighter around me to try to keep from getting to cold from the rain despite the fact that my hoodie has already been soaked through.
As I trudge up the stairs onto the porch of the house I turn around and take a moment to watch the house just across the street. The house I grew up in and made most of my childhood memories. But I wasn't here for a trip down memory lane, so I turn to the door and knock three times knowing that someone will open the door in a few seconds. I don't know what I'm going to say when they ask what I'm doing here and what I want. I can't exactly say 'Hi long time no see. By the way your kinda my legal guardian now according to my parents will.' Before I can even think of what I will say the door swings open.
"Hi. Can I help you?" he asks obviously not recognising me.
I don't blame him though it has been five years although the only thing that has really changed about my appearance is my hair which is longer and blonder. I take a look at him and realise that he doesn't look different at all since I last saw him. Sure he's grown up but his face looks the same.
"Hi Jake. Can I come in?" I ask. When I say his name it looks like something has clicked with him. Like he figured out who I am.
"Oh my god if it isn't little Riley Walters. What are you doing back in town?"
"It's a long story. Can I please come in?"
"Sure. We're just about to have dinner so everyone is in the dining room. Come on in and I'll set a place for you as well." He says letting me in. I give a nod before we make our way to the dining room.
I can hear the chatter from the dining room getting louder the closer we get. The sounds bring back memories of when I used to be involved in that chatter. The Knights were practically family before my family moved away. My parents kept in touch but all of us kids fell out of touch even though we were all so close all through our childhood. I stand outside the dining room and observe everyone before they notice me. Everyone quietens down when Jake calls out for them to shut up and listen.
"Guess who was at the door?" He asks while standing in front of me so none of them could see me.
Everyone just shrugs and expectantly waits for him to tell. After waiting a few seconds he steps aside so that everyone can see me.
"You all remember Riley Walters don't you?"
There is a moment when no one says anything and they all sit there staring as if they're trying to comprehend whether it really is me. Kourtney is the first one to get up and she comes over and embraces me is a warm hug. I really have missed Kourtney, she was like my second mother when I lived in Lambert. She is honestly one of the most amazing people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
"Honey what are you doing back in town?" She asks.
I pretend that I didn't hear her question and let her continue to hug me. When she finally releases me I see the rest of the family watching me. I take a moment to look at everyone and see how much they have all changed since we were children. Since there is nine in the family I'll give a quick rundown of each person in the family.
Will and Kourtney are the parents, both extremely good looking and they have passed on those genes to their children. Will is a school teacher for kids in first and second grade whereas Kourtney is an interior decorator at some firm in town. Axel and Chase are the oldest kids in the family their twin brothers and are absolutely hilarious. They must be 20 now and last I heard they were starting up their own business. Chase was doing architecture and planning whereas Axel was the one building and putting the plans into action. They were both doing what they were good at and working as a team.
