"Tell me the story of how the sun loved the moon so much, he died every night to let her breathe," the girl's voice rang out into the night, catching the attention of the eldest in the group. Her chocolatey brown hair, once covering her face, was now brushed to the side with her slim fingers, ignoring the dirt that clung to it as she softly smiled.

"You basically told the story yourself."

She looked over at the blonde who lay sprawled out on a sleeping bag, eyes gazing up at the night sky. The blonde looked away from her stars briefly in order to look the older girl in the eyes, a wide smile on her face.

"Yeah, but you tell it better than I do."

She sighed lightly, looking over her shoulder towards the small tent that sat behind her, along with another girl lying just outside of the canvas canopy. Her eyes trailed over the length of the girl's back, concealed by a thin, grey sheet as her raven hair lay sprawled over top. She inhaled deeply before releasing the breath in a long exhale, her breathing steady. She finally turned back to the expectant blonde who now lay with her elbows propped up, staring at her with bright eyes.

"Alright."

Her voice carried softly, the crackling of the fire not having the power to drown out the sound of her hushed whispers.

"The Sun was a vain, vain being. He spent most of his days basking in the attention he received from the people down below on the earth. He would watch as they spent countless hours baking in the heat he provided, always welcoming him with open arms as he rose in the morning and bidding him farewell as he left in the evening. But unfortunately, as time wore on, the Sun became too consumed in his own beauty and importance that he pushed to stay out longer, wishing his followers will continue to worship him for much longer periods of time."

"However, little did he know that there was another being whom he shared the sky with, an unknown and forgotten beauty in which he has never seen. The Moon could only watch and wait for the Sun to finish his parade, sitting in his shadow."

"One day, by chance, the Sun just so happened to look away from the earth as he departed, and he caught a glimpse of something... indescribable. He saw the sky behind him, filled with tiny, raging balls of fire and gas, but they all seemed to point to the major source of light in the sky - the Moon."

"She rose with a sort of hesitance, eyes focused on the earth below with flushed cheeks, watching as all of the people on the earth went into their homes, turned off their lights, and slept. She was used to the quiet and stillness of the night - something that came along only as she appeared - but she never expected to come across the Sun."

"His first instinct was to call out to her because never before has he seen someone quite as beautiful and stunning as he. He wished to draw near to her, to experience the world through her eyes. But, no matter how much he called out to her, she never seemed to hear; and it was time for him to go."

" He knew he had to see her again; and so he tried that morning, tried to chase after her, but it only seemed to drive her further away. Then he tried to stay, to finally get to express the burning feelings he felt for her - but she never appeared. It wasn't until he began to leave and she, in turn, appear that he realized something very important: he will never get his wish. The two could never coexist because they come from two very different worlds - his full of light and adoration, while hers full of darkness and quiet."

"The Moon could not live and thrive unless he was gone, so he made a vow that evening. He would have to die to let her breathe. He grew to love her too much to do otherwise."

As she finished her story, the blonde turned to look back up at the sky, her eyes instantly finding the bright white light of the moon overhead. She couldn't help but smile at her beauty, just like the sun.

All the while, the brunette sat there silently staring into the fire, her slender fingers mindlessly tracing the crescent-shaped scar on her left shoulder blade - something she found herself doing every time she told this story.

A log in the burning fire crackled as it split, tumbling to the bottom of the pit, causing her to finally snap out of her daze. She quickly stood to her feet before the blonde could say anything. Mumbling a quick "goodnight", she slipped into the darkness of the tent, silently laying down onto the sleeping bag beneath her. She rolled over, facing the small bundle that lay between tow worn coats, watching the steady rising and falling of the various fabrics layered on top of her world.

"Goodnight, Zoe."

a/n.

so, yes, this is a new story. I just got the idea for this because, let's face it, we all need that kind of cliche story, and this will be mine :)

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that I won't come up with my own interesting ideas... :) this will be a different kind of cliche, so please, give it a chance!

also, on a different note, this chapter is based off of that quote from tumblr so yes, that is where I got my inspiration for this little prologue for so IT DOES NOT BELONG TO ME. also, I made my own little adaptation of the moon and the sun love story, so THIS IS MY INTERPRETATION AND MY CREATION, BASED OFF OF A STORY THAT ALREADY EXISTS. SO NO HATE OR COMMENTS SAYING I STOLE SOMETHING. any similarities are merely coincidental :)
