"Here you are, Skyler," my best friend Alex said when he approached our table at Tropical Smoothie, "One 'Sunrise Sunset' with Splenda."
"Thanks," I took the icy smoothie from him and began sipping, "So hows your summer been?" I ask.
"Pretty good," Alex replied as he took his usual seat across from me.
I know what you must be thinking. This is just another girl falls in love with her best friend and ruins their relationship story. This is TOTALLY different.
"Hey I forgot to tell you," Alex said after a long silence, "My family is going to Atlantic City for a week."
"Oh that's cool," I say.
"There's something else," Alex says mischievously.
"What," I ask.
"I was wondering if you wanted to go with us."
Those words hung in the air for a few of moments. "I don't know," I say, "I'd have to ask my mom."
"Of course," Alex said sarcastically.
"What?" I ask.
"Nothing," he says. I can tell that he's trying his hardest not to laugh. That's one of the things I like about him. He often laughs at nothing, which in turn makes me laugh. Just not today.
"No really, what's so funny," I ask.
Alex takes an over-exaggerated sip of his smoothie, looks me straight in the eye, and says, "It's already been arranged!"
My mouth drops, "You mean you already talked to my mother about this?" I ask, mostly in surprise.
"Of course," he says.
"And she said yes?"
"Why wouldn't she?" Alex asks me, "My parents and my sister are going to be there too."
I look at him. Smile. And then quickly look away.
"What?" he asks me.
"Nothing," I look directly into the giant styrofoam cup and take a small sip.
"Is something wrong?" he asks me.
"Nothing's wrong," I say dreamily, "Absolutely nothing."

It all feels surreal, thinking about it on the short bike ride home. I can just picture it. Alex and I walking on the beach together. This trip could be my chance to tell him how I feel about him.
Alex looks at me, smiles, and says, "You're daydreaming."
"Huh?" I say, "Oh." I'm extremely embarrassed. I can feel my cheeks turning bright red.
"You're cute when you're blushing," he says.
The wind suddenly changed direction and my long, brown hair blew into my face. Alex started laughing when he noticed me struggling to keep my hair under control. I realized how ridiculous I must've looked trying to hold my hair back and ride my yellow cruiser and started laughing too.
Alex and I live next-door to each other, so my mom wasn't surprised when Alex and me came through the door together, laughing hysterically.
"So how was your day?" my mom asked when we entered the kitchen. She was busy cooking what smelled like pasta.
"Pretty good Mrs. Lucas," Alex replied for me, "I told Skyler about our trip next week."
"Did you thank Alex for inviting you, sweetie?" my mom asked.
"Of course," I replied, "I can't wait."
"I better be going," Alex said.
"You're welcome to stay for dinner," my mom offered.
"Thank you Mrs. Lucas," Alex said, "But I have to babysit my little sister tonight."
"Bye Alex," I said while we walked to the door.
"Bye Skyler," Alex said. He gave me a peck on the cheek and left.
I closed the door and walked up to my room to start packing. I took out my brown and blue polka dot suitcase and unzipped it. I walked over to my closet and took seven pairs of Hollister Co light-wash jean shorts off of their hangers. I carefully folded them and placed then in the suitcase. I also packed seven tank tops in different patterns, styles and colors, my two strapless Aeropostale bikini tops (one purple paisley and one black) and their matching bottoms, my toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, hair-tie ball, and mis-match flip-flops from the dollar store.
After I finished packing, I lied down on my bed, opened my laptop, and went on Facebook to check my messages. As soon as I log on, I hear a low beep coming from the website. It was Alex IMing me.
Alex: Hey
Me: Hey
Alex: How r u?
Me: Good, how r u?
Alex: Pretty good. Missing you.
Me: Aw! You're so sweet!
Alex: Thanks, I try
We don't message each other for a few minutes. I can't think of anything to say.
Alex: Let's play a game
Me: What kind of game?
Alex: A guessing game
Guessing game? What's he up to?
Me: Okay how do u play?
Alex: We both agree on a catagory and we try to guess each other's favorite thing in that catagory.
Me: Okay you start
Alex:You have 2 pick the theme
Me: Color
Alex: Purple
Me: How did u know?!?!?!?!
Alex: I guess I just know u well
We play the category game until one in the morning when I say
Me: Alex, I really need 2 go 2 sleep
Alex: Aw! I'll talk 2 u 2morrow
Me: Mkay. Nite
Alex: Nite <3
I immediately shut my laptop and take a long, deep breath. He signed off with a heart! I think. I don't know if I'm going to be able to fall asleep. After my conversation with Alex, I'm to excited to even think straight. What if he likes me? What if he doesn't like me? What if he knows that I like him and he's just messing with me?
After hours of freaking out about Alex and mine's conversation, my eyes start to close slowly. Eventually, I drift into sleep.
