(Jade's POV)
Caleb followed me, through the maze of rocks. Firefly is a Rocky Mountain Horse, used to the climb up and across mountainous terrain. I rushed up the nearest rocky ridge to the top of the canyon. Caleb looked back and fired a warning shot before continuing. I was sure we had lost them in the canyon. There were rocks up ahead; we easily jumped them. I came to a stop, a cliff edge in front of me. Caleb pulled at his reins.
"They're gone, right?" I whispered "Right?" I looked at Caleb.
"The bridge, there..." He pointed. I saw it. A bridge made of rock, with no kind of support beams beneath it. I looked back. They were here.
"Go!" Caleb urged. I stirred Firefly towards the bridge and across it. It shook slightly, crumbling at the edges. I quickly scuffled to the other side. Caleb followed. Behind him, where the bridge began, the rock started to crack open. It's dusty sun soaked surface had broken due to it's dryness.
"Caleb, come back!" The older lawman yelled. Caleb let Hero leap to the other side. The rock began to fall away.
"No can't do, sir," He turned, aimed his gun and shot rapidly at the remaining rock bridge. It crumbled, falling to the bottom of the canyon.
Caleb turned Hero around and broke into a canter. I followed.
"They'll never get over there!" I smiled, gleefully
"Don't be so sure," He answered "They're ain't a criminal that we ain't caught. They find a way; They always do,"
I shuddered. We to keep going. The border was still days away.
We galloped for miles. The sunset turned orange on the horizon. I let Caleb take the lead; Hero continued to thrush his hooves backwards and forwards.
"Still a while yet?" I asked, fully knowing the response. Caleb only nodded. I frowned.Hours we spend riding over the prairies and past tumbleweed. It wasn't long until days passed. A border, on the edge of the horizon, glistened, promisingly.
The horses slowed and Caleb and I turned to face each other. Our chance at a new life lay only metres in front of us...
