There was an eerie silence in the giant oak trees that hung high about the stronghold camp. It was moonhigh, and the only thing Fallenstorm could hear was the breathing of him and his Clanmates. Relying on the slim openings in the leaves in the trees, Fallenstorm watched along his leader and half of the other cats of the clans as the six strongholds ate their raw meat. All of the smaller cats had to recoil to avoid the stench wafting upwards into the trees.
They sat in a circle around the dancing flames of the large burning fire that was contained by stones that surrounded it. The strongholds were the biggest cats any of them had ever seen in their entire lives. Hauntedfeather, Thistleteeth, Deerheart, and Birdsong were even told that StarClan didn't know anything about the cats.
Fallenstorm's eyes rested on Lily. She was quite a bit intimidating, and he knew that she would always stop at nothing to get her way. His heart lurched as she started to move, but she just seemed to be adjusting to some discomfort. "Do you think it will work?" Dawnstar hissed into Fallenstorm's ear. He flicked his ears as his eyes stared around the camp, seeing nothing strange yet. He knew how small the chances were, with a cat that big their bodies were probably strong enough to hold death berries.
"Yes." He hissed back, then froze as Lily's eyes flicked up to the trees, resting a tail-length from Fallenstorm's. The calico she-cat's eyes ran blood red, and sucked all life out of anything they landed on. He should know, almost getting eaten live by her was the closest he ever wanted to get to any cat like Lily.
"Are you okay, Lily?" Bone asked, his gaze shifting from the fire to the she-cat, who seemed to be squirming a little more. Her face contracted a little, then relaxed as she found a comfortable position laying down. Fallenstorm's heart beat in his ears so loud he could have sworn one of the strongholds could have heard it too. It made him nervous that none of the other larger cats were doing the same.
This has to work. Fallenstorm convinced himself, looking into the night of star-less blackness. He knew if he lost hope, the others would too. This will work.
