prologue

the afternoon dylan left to college

matthew espinosa was utterly sad. in fact, it was probably the saddest he has ever felt. the whole afternoon he had spent crying in his room; matt had a sensation that soon his room would be flooded with salty tears.

it was completely odd to think that matt's older brother, dylan, would not be sleeping soundly under the same roof as matt anymore. dylan was one of matt's best friends; they played football together and talked about boy problems and dylan was even kind enough to help out matt with his homework at times. matthew would miss dylan so unimaginably much.

but matt decided to stop sobbing; that wouldn't make dylan ditch nyu and come back to boring, old richmond. matt the decided to walk over to his brown, mahogany desk. dylan had left a box on the desk. matt opened the wornout shoe box, curiousity filling his mind. matt noticed that there were eight objects in the box, and started pulling out the objects one by one.

the eight,
a list:

1. a deflated football

2. a spoon (what the fuck?)

3. a picture containing matt, dylan, and their mother

4. a condom with a sticky note on it that said: might come in handy ;)

5. an old, smelly teddy bear (( matt threw that to the laundry basket right away...))

6. a baseball tee

7. a $5 bill (( oh, dylan, how generous !! ))

8. and a book

that's it

right after shoving the 5 dollar bill in his pocket, matt grabbed the book; frankly, it had been the object that sparked his interest and curiosity the most. so he looked at the front cover, the handbook for love it said. matt had no clue what it was and he was very confused. however, he opened it. he immediatly noticed it was dylan's hanwriting indeed. matt begun getting lost in the book's words.

"hello, matthew. welcome to a book which has tips on how to get a girl to fall very hard for you. inside the next few pages, you will find everything you need to know. this all comes from personal experience. i wish that you may find this very useful through the rest of your junior and senior years.

i had planned to give you this book the day i left to college. so right now, i am probably unpacking my moving boxes in my new dorm room; emotions are flooding inside my head. but i want to let you know that this book is written by me. and whenever you're feeling lonely just take a look at the pages in this book, and you will hear my voice. i love you brother and please use these love handbook with someone you are already attracted to."

matt skimmed through the book. twenty-five chapters. twenty-five tips. it included cute date ideas, cheesy poems "you" wrote, flirting methods, and even a helpful, mini kamasutra chapter.

matt knew right then that he had to try the love handbook. he wanted to see if it worked. and he knew exactly who he was going to try it on.

matt was going to try it on his best friend, adria hernandez, because she had subtly friendzoned matt a couple of times while they were in middle school.

he was going to try the book on her... just for the fun of it.
