Mr. Player's Kids: Chapter Six
Names are a pain. But of course being a future mother and all, names were a painful necessity. Studies show that one of the most frequent questions asked are "what's your name". My best bet would also be that a nameless child would not have many friends either.
And so with the "name yourself, kid" option unavailable, I must unfortunately come up with a name for my child.
Chase's father immediately suggested Chase Jr, for a boy, insinuating that it was of the utmost honor to be named after your parent. His mother on the other hand suggested the child be named Agnes, for a girl, in honor of Chase's 97-years-old-and-still-going-strong great-grandmother.
Chase did not believe it held the utmost of honor, shooting it out almost as fast as the idea had shown up.
I realized early on that I did not have the ability to come up with names I had a favor for on the spot- I would have to hear or read the name to remember that I liked it. So Chase handed me a pad of post-its and a small sharpie on a key chain to carry around for whenever this moment would come.
And the moments did come. At the most convenient of time? Not necessarily. For example:
Grocery Shopping: As I am watching the woman at the counter swipe the 3rd box of fruit snacks (one of my biggest cravings) I notice her name-tag, which says Cissaly, and gasp. She looks at me, worried, noticing that I am quite pregnant. She thinks my water broke. I reassure her quickly that I'm definitely not in labor, I would be screaming, I just really like her name and it is going on my list. She gives me a strange look and smiles and laughs for a bit before handing me my bags and I book the hell out of the place to avoid any further name encounters.
Walking to yoga class: I accidentally overhear a woman speak the names Louis and Evangeline and so I flip out, ask the two middle-age women how particularly they spell the name, and fumble around for my notepad to write the new ones down.
Baby naming is an art.
And so, accumulating all of the names that Chase decided were definitely out of the question for his child, I had a list in my hand containing the future name of my baby.
And so it goes:
Girl Names
Evangeline
Cissaly
Rosalie
Mae
Annalise
Elinor
Adelaide
Boy Names
Louis
Asher
Beck
Cade
Felix
Tobias
Finn
Reeve
Everyone hated how strange they were, which I agreed (they were pretty unusual). But I had grown up with one of the most common names ever, and in this particular case common was most definitely not that way to go.
"This baby is getting the coolest name in the world." Summer giggled as she painted my toe nails a light pink. Being large and almost whale-like I couldn't exactly see my toes anymore.
"Only the best..." I started, remembering a topic I wanted to bring up. "Will you tell me what's happening with Kenny?"
Kenny and Summer were as you would call it "a thing", and they were possibly the most annoying couple in existence. The night they met was even more excruciating:
I flopped down on the couch in my purple bunny slippers, squishing Lucy a little too hard.
"Hey, Emma? I know you're going to have a little baby and everything, and your butt really isn't so big, but I can't breathe so well when you sit like that." Lucy said in a muffled voice. I laughed and got up as fast as I could and kissed her cheek, simply because she was too adorable not too.
Kenny was Chase's best friend. Kenny was Chase's Summer.
To be quite honest, I really did think he was a douchebag before I met the guy. What with the whole inflamed ego and bad boy status thing, which is exactly what I thought Chase was.
Kenny Fields is definitely not a douchebag.
The first person he said hello to was Lucy, by picking her up and swinging her around and placing a big kiss on her cheek which she pretended to be disgusted about and wiped off. He then said hello to everyone else before reaching me and, not having ever met me before, surprised me when he opened up his arms with a huge smile on his face saying "there's the beautiful mommy".
Kenny Fields is definitely not a douchebag.
Summer walked in a bit later and I must say, as soon as they saw each other it was like they were already in love. Which is strange, especially since she isn't the one to fall in love. Summer is more of an independent beauty, as we call her.
Summer Knight is definitely not an independent beauty.
I mean, at least not anymore.
I found them making out on the way of disposing of some back shrimp. The bathroom was most definitely occupado.
"What do you mean? I'm not pregnant or anything, if that's what you're asking." She winked at me, finishing my nails.
"Well I guess it was just-" I was interrupted by a pain on the side of my rib cage. I took a breath, waiting a second for the pain to go away, but it continued. "Summer something's not right." I said slowly. She didn't panic.
"I'm calling Chase alright? Odds are nothing's wrong and it's just-" I shrieked, interrupting her speech, "alright never mind that, I'm driving you to the hospital and then I'll call Chase just hold o-"
I know it's what they all say, but I couldn't hear the rest of her sentence when my mind and body went black.
