Chapter One~ Past
"Louis! I bet I can beat you to the bridge!" I yelled, my feet now moving faster as I ran down the hill. The wind blew in my hair and the cold lake air nipped at my blue jacket as I raced to the big wooden structure that stood in the middle of our town. I looked behind me to see my best friend, catching up to my pace.
"Emily, you're a cheater!" he yelled and I just laughed, the bridge now only a few feet from me. I reached out and touched it, watching as a frustrated Louis raced toward me. "That was not fair!" he pouted looking at me with puppy dog eyes, "You didn't even say go!"
"Sorry Lou, I guess I'm just too fast for you," I laugh as i sit down in the grass, resting my back on the bridge. Louis does the same and scoots closer to me, with a little frown still on his face. We looked out on to our town, now covered with autumn colors as we sat on the cold grass. The lake was shimmering beside us, and we were getting anxious awaiting our new adventure in the next year of secondary school. My smile faded, and I looked down at my lap as I remembered why I was really playing with Louis today. I had to tell him.
"Hey Boobear," I said looking over at him. His bright blue eyes locked on mine and I watched as his eyebrows furrowed together.
"Em, what's wrong?" he asked and my heart sank in to my chest. I couldn't tell him. He was my best friend for as long as I could remember. This would break him. What was going to happen when I leave?
"We're moving," I whispered and I felt his eyes staring at me, "tomorrow." I waited for some sort of answer, but only got silence. My eyes made their way over to where he was sitting, and I watched as he blankly stared at the ground.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked and I could hear the hurt in his voice. "You leave tomorrow! I don't ever get to see you again?" he yelled.
"Lou, I couldn't tell you. It was too hard and I only found out a few days ago. I'm so sorry Louis, I never wanted to leave you in the first place. My dad got a job in London and we all have to move with him. He says there is little chance of us ever coming back." My voice shook, and my eyes started to fill with tears.
"I can't ever hang out with you again?" He asked and I saw a tear roll down his cheek as I shook my head. We stayed silent as we watched the sun set over the town, filling the sky with a brilliant shade of pink.
"I'll never forget you Louis," I said, "Never."
"I won't forget you either Em, not for the rest of my life." I looked in to his blue eyes and leaned over to give him a quick kiss on the cheek before I stood up. He smiled sadly at me and we hugged one last time. "I guess this is goodbye?" he whispered and I nodded my head never wanting to leave him, but I knew I had to. "Bye Boobear- I'll miss you forever."

"Emily! C'mon downstairs, I have something to tell you!" My mom yelled and I quickly shut my laptop. I skipped down the steps to find my mom with the phone in her hand and a big smile on her face. She put down the phone as I sat on the couch awaiting the big news.
"So you graduate in a couple days..." she said and I just stared at her.
"Mom, I know. I'm the one graduating, this isn't a surprise." I joked and she just shushed me.
"Emily, how would you feel about going back to Doncaster this summer?" She asked. I couldn't believe it. Back to Doncaster? For the whole summer? "That's not the best part!" she squealed, "Jay and the girls said Louis is supposed to be back too! It'll be just like old times!" She said and I felt my heart start to race. Louis was coming back? I started to smile really big. The last time I saw him was on TV and now I finally got to see him again. "Start packing! We leave the day after graduation!" she yelled.
I get to see Louis again. My bestfriend from when I was a kid. I stood up and ran to my room to start packing. I couldn't wait to see everybody again.
