Cracked Skin of the Beginning

"PUNCH BUGGY RED", I yell and lightly punch my best friend, Mikey's, arm. "OW!", he screams in my ear. I laugh at our game that we've played since fourth grade.

"So, are you excited?!", Mikey's asks me, his eyes gleaming. I glare at him, "What do you think?". He furrows his eyebrows and looks down in disappointment, "Oh...", he mutters.

After a few seconds a smile sneaks onto my lips, I can't hold the frown much longer. "Of course I'm excited, you idiot!!", I laugh, in hopes he's not too distraught my my joke. Mikey raises his head back up very slowly, staring intently into my eyes. I can't tell what he's thinking, or if it will happen again.

A smile breaks his face, though, and I breathe a sigh of relief. "Okay, good," he laughs, "I can't believe we're going on our first vacation together!" "Yeah, me too!", I say, leaving the conversation to look out the window.

My eyes widen in bewilderment. The scenery was outstanding! The light blues and pinks of the slowly setting sun, the bright green of leaves and freshly cut grass, and the scattered early spring blooms of pastel flowers left me in awe.

I reach down to pick up my phone off the floorboard of the backseat where it must've fallen. I click the on button, and as to no surprise, no one's messaged me. I plug in my earbuds and click on my playlist of "Faves". "Car Radio" by Twenty Øne Piløts comes on, and I nod my head along to the words I'm not paying attention to, but know by heart.

Waiting for the car to come to a stop at the next stoplight, I open "camera" on my phone. The real life Wonderland outside the car window beckons my fingertips, and whispers to be captured and remembered forever. I take about fifteen to twenty photos, and then go to look through them to delete the blurry ones.

None of them are blurry, but I delete every one of them. I slide through photo after photo, an eyebrow raised. Every single one, the same thing: a black figure in the middle and a dreary day in the back ground. I try not to let it bother me, and grab my pillow out of the trunk behind me.

My soft, white pillow filled with just the right amount of feathers tries to take the thoughts out of my head, but to no avail. A tear slips down my cheek, "Why do I get scared so easily????", I think to myself as I slowly drift off to nightmares, and await for the adventures of the next day in the mountains of California...
