Chapter One ~ Grann

As the night sky got darker, it got harder to walk or run. I knew I was close to my destination. Grann's house was not even a quarter of a mile away. I turned past the big willow tree my mother used to sit at when she was a small child. I had found her journal there. Tucked nice and neatly in between the roots that stuck out of the ground. It had a bunch of very good drawings in there, and I liked to sit back and look at them sometimes.

I was lost in my thoughts when I had realized I had approached Grann's house. I had seen one light coming from the window. Thinking that Grann was up. I walked inside, and seen no one. The TV was off, blankets were all folded and into the chest. The lights were off in the hallway, kitchen, living room, and all the bedrooms. The one I had seen was the bathroom light. I threw my bag into my designated bedroom, and walked over to the bathroom door. "Grann?" I said, knocking on the door. I heard sniffling and crying, so I knocked on the door harder. "Grann?" I said again. I heard her get off the side of the bathtub, and walk over to the doorknob and slowly turn it. She opened the door, letting herself out, while shutting the lights off. I must've grown, because I was towering over her. As she turned right and went into the kitchen, and put on some tea. I knew what she was doing, so I grabbed our blankets, put them on the couch, and walked over to the TV and put in the movie, Frozen.

"Here you go, Leah. Let's get some rest now." Grann said, handing me one of the two mugs she was holding. One was royal blue with little white snowflakes on it, it was one of the many mugs which I had decorated. The other one was purple, with lime-ish green and baby blue colored polka dots covered it. Grann had always loved winter, so the blue one was hers. I had just liked rainbows and colors in general, so I drank out of whichever mug I got my hands on.

I snuggled next to Grann as the movie started to play, and I heard the first scene start out as I fell asleep. "Cut through the heart, cold and clear. Strike for love and strike for fear. There's beauty and there's danger here. Split the ice apart. Beware the frozen heart.." Those were the last things I heard before I drifted into a much needed nap.
