Chapter 3

Ding. Dong.

"Mm, maybe later Mother."

Ding Dong.

"Just  a few minutes more?"

DING DONG. DING DONG.

"Alright, alright!"

Oh bloody. I dozed off on the couch and its probably still 2AM. Who could possibly ring the doorbell at this time?

Dragging my feet to the door, I swing it open revealing two furious parents.

"Why did you take so long Sophia?!" my Mother demanded.

"Have you checked the time?" I inquire, "It's two in the morning and its definitely not my fault you forgot to take your keys!"

"It's nine in the morning, child." Father replied sounding a tad bit annoyed.

Oh that's right. I was working late last night too. Although, I made sure not to take my usual route home. I might just spot a dead man walking.

"Welcome home, dear parents!" I feign enthusiasm,"Care to explain why this 'meeting' took an entire day?"

The two of them exchanged glances which made things slightly suspicious. Something's going on.

"You haven't bathed yet! Get to your room, Sophia!" Mother demanded.

Leave it to her to blow up almost all the time. But since I was brought up posh, I'll always have to cover up my attitude around my parents.

"Right away, Mother." I sigh.

Stepping into my shower, I thought about yesterday. A certain persistent thing in my mind didn't want me to forget the horrifying incident.

A constant question remains.

Should I hand myself in as a witness? Should I tell the media what I know?

But then again, I'm not completely positive if the dead body was that of Dr.Peters. On the other hand, people don't randomly disappear on the same day. Coincidence is a possibility though.

After wearing the first thing I find in my closet and blow-drying my hair, I run down the stairs in hope of breakfast.

As I approached the dining hall, I could hear the voices of my parents. It sounded like they were having an argument but I couldn't quite make out what they were saying.

Whatever they were discussing was supposedly secret, because they spoke in hushed tones.

Perking my ears, I intended to eavesdrop on them.

"There is absolutely no danger." my Father's voice reassured.

"What if Anderson was right? What if it happens again?"  Mother's voice said.

"What IF he was mistaken?"

"But if he was right, then what do you suppose we must do?"

"I don't trust Anderson. So the question remains if he is right."

"Will you STOP being so arrogant?" Mother's voice boomed.

"Keep it down, will you? Sophia might hear us"

You're right about that, Father.

"Look, Henry," Mother reasoned,"I have a feeling Sophia should know. At least about what Anderson said. What happened on Saturday night might just happen again! And this time, it might be one of-"

"Enough!" Father snapped. "I will not hear more bickering! Do you understand how much it would affect Sophia to know? Considering Saturday, coincidence, perhaps? There is always a possibility."

Coincidence. Too much of that happening these days. Or maybe that was just an excuse?

I busied myself with something for a while before entering the dining hall. Just to avoid suspicion.

"Hello Mother! Hello Father!"

"Good morning!" They say simultaneously. I didn't miss out how their eyes widened just a tad bit.

"How was your day yesterday?" Father asked.

"A bit boring, I must say. But nonetheless, I was also entertained," I replied,"How about you?"

"It's been a bit hectic at BRIDGE Committee." Mother replied.

Father choked on his food at this and turned to glare at Mother.

BRIDGE Committee? My parents worked at BRIDGE?

How did I not know this before?

I stared at Mother in disbelief.

"BR-BRIDGE?" I managed to choke out.

"I see you've read the paper, dear?" Mother said.

She glances at Father before he nodded grimly.

"Would you like to know more?"
