Hissing, I dropped to the ground just as an Icewing's tail missed my head by an inch. I swept my legs underneath his legs, making him topple over, unbalanced. I quickly pounced on him. I opened my jaws, calling up a blast of fire to scorch his face off. It was entirely against my will to do so, but I had to for the sake of my mother.
"Enough!" yelled a voice behind me, "You have proven yourself. Great job, Bronzepetal." I nodded and quickly stepped off my opponent. Skyram smiled at me, nodded, and flew off.
"Are you okay?" I blurted out, staring at my opponent at concern. I made sure that Skyram was out of earshot, because I didn't want him to see the "soft" side of me.
He glared at me. Seal guts, how dumb is this dragon? Do I even look okay? Look at this scratch, this one...
"Hey! I'm not dumb!" I frowned at him.
Oh yeah, not to mention that fact that she's also a mind reader. What a freak! Ugh! A million ugly thoughts whirled around his head.
"Look, I'm sorry if I hurt you, but you know how Flare would treat me if I -" my voice wobbled, and I looked down. Immediately, his expression softened. It was known throughout Skyram's organization that Flare was a harsh dragon. When Flare was younger, she blinded her own sister because she was "too stupid for the world". While most of the other dragons could agree to her statement, they were still very shocked that Flare would do such thing. Some dragons were already afraid of her, and when Flare blinded her own sister, fear spread across the entire organization like a wild fire in a forest. Skyram came later to wash out the flames, but he was too late. The fire spread too quickly, and it left some lasting imprints.
And I was one of those trees that caught on fire.
