The Night that Changed my Life

The strong stench of liquor creeps through the door

My step father trudges in and slams the door like a gunshot

The taste of tears in my mouth

My brother grabs my hand and hides me in the corner

A soft, blue comforter covers my small scarred body.

My mother screaming at him

Terrified like a child in the dark, You can't do this.

He was going to drive the truck into the river,

So when he walked out of the door everything looked so dark

I scream,

My mother grabs the Value Place landline so fast its like a lightening bolt.

Several minutes pass before the police

Banging at the door

They got here in time, he never even left the parking lot.

They asked a million questions,

Then leave.

Fear overcomes me like a fear of God,

as I observe the door opening

My step father trudges through the door

As terrified as I was I go back to the comfort of the white, big hotel bed

I drift into a silent peaceful sleep

I forget about tonight

I have never slept so peacefully.
