Liam's POV
Closing the last file on my desk, I leaned back in my chair and let out a loud sigh. The new promotion I recieved seemed to be a lot like my last rank, with more paperwork. The usual restraining orders against ex-husbands, lawsuits, disability claims, and so on. Being a detective seemed alot more exciting in my mind than what it turned out to be. I looked up at my ceiling for a few moments before glancing at the clock that read, 11:24 PM. Another late night to go home to my dog and a tv dinner. As I begun to neatly put away the files piled in my desk, my boss, Simon, walked into my office.
"Enjoying the new promotion so far?" He said sarcastically.
"Yeah, all the action I could ask for." I replied, grabbing my coat off the back of my chair.
"Hey, in all seriousness, I have a case for you." He said in a hushed tone.
"Another restraining order?" I asked, rolling my eyes.
"No, a very sensitive case. You need to take this one very seriously. Got it?" He asked. My curiosity grew as I realized that he was indeed being serious, and I may finally be getting some action.
"Yeah, got it. What is it?" I asked, motioning him to have a seat.
"A young girl, about 19 years old. She's had an extremely rough past, and we need to find someone." He said with a slight pause, mentally debating if he should continue. "She...she's seen alot of things that noone should ever have to see, and done alot of things that I could never imagine doing, just to survive. If I give you this case, you must promise me that you will never back out, or give up on her like many people have done before. You must promise to be compassionate, even if she gives you a hard time, trust her even when you think she is lying, and be completely dedicated to this case, and be willing to drop everything your doing no matter what time of day or night, to tend to her or the case." He said, looking me in the eyes the entire time. It took a moment to process that this was truly a huge case, and that this could possibly break my reputation of being the new guy.
"Yes sir, I promise." I finally spoke, ready to take on this case.
"Good. I'll fill you in on the details tomorrow afternoon, and you'll meet with her the next morning. But for now, get some rest. You have a big day tomorrow." He finished. And with that, he was gone, leaving me to my imagination. Was this girl going to be a nut job? He did say be nice when she gave me a hard time, so what did that mean? Have other detectives gotten fed up and quit? What will happen to me during this case? Will I be in danger? My mind ran in circles thinking of the possibilities. I quickly shook away the thoughts and gathered up my things, heading out of my office.
"Hey! Coffee tomorrow morning? On me!" A more experienced detective, Louis, asked me as he walked torwards the doors with me.
"Yeah, sure! 8:30?" I asked. Louis was one of the few kind colleagues I had. He was like a mentor to me, and wanted to show me the ropes, him and Zayn were really my only hopes of making it. I met Louis and Zayn when I was working my way up from being a cop, and we instantly became good friends. My other two pals, Niall and Harry, were high ranking officers, but not quite at my level yet, so it wasn't often that we would all be together.
"Yeah, deffinitely!" Louis spoke, breaking me from my thoughts. We parted ways and said our goodbyes, heading home. I walked up to my apartment door, punching in my 4-digit code to get in. Once I reached my door, I unlocked it, setting my briefcase and coat down, on my dining room table. I heard the padding of little paws on the hardwood, making its way to the door, to be greeted by a bouncing puppy who had just woken up. Once I had changed out of my work attire, I made myself a dinner, and opened up a can of Loki's favorite dog food, and sat in front of the tv. Loki gobbled up the remains of.her food and jumped up next to me, setting her head in my lap.
"You're the only girl i'll ever need, right babe?" I said as I scratched behind her ear and finished off my dinner. I made my way to the bedroom, with my little fur ball following close behind. Getting comfortable, I turned off the light next to the bed, and thought of the case again. Thinking positively, I knew I could manage anything that was thrown at me, I'm very good with people, I'm a problem solver, and I worked my ass off to get this far. This would be an easy case. I was sure of it. I began to dose off, knowing I was prepared. Or was I?
