"I want to be the very best that no one ever was", that's what all the other kids always said. Back in trainer school, it feels like such a long time ago. I really never understood why any of those kids wanted to be trainers so badly, even my best friend Jack wanted to be a Pokemon trainer when he grew up. I never understood, but maybe I'll understand today. It's my 14th birthday, and according to the rules set by the Government, that means today is the day I receive my starter Pokemon.
"CHATOT! CHATOT!", screamed my annoying alarm, that by the way dad is not a good birthday present. My eyes opened wide, and I leaped out of bed. I went a bit further than expected and slammed right into my closet door. "CHATOT! CHATOT" That is it. I turned back towards my bed grabbed my alarm and chucked it out the window. "AH! Collin! Watch it man!" Oh no. "Sorry Jack, but you know how that thing gets on my nerves." Of course Jack wouldn't notice something flying out a window, seeing how he is always going at light speed. "So, today's the day, isn't it?", yells up from the ground. "Yeah, not really a big deal though." "Not really a big deal! Collin, you get your first Pokemon today!" "Sure, but you know I am planning to be a writer, not a Pokemon trainer." "Still, you should be excited, now you'll have someone to help you out when writing." I respond sarcastically, "Yeah, it can hand me an eraser when I make a spelling mistake." "Joke all you want, but now is the time to head over to Sandgem town and get your Pokemon! Quick, get dressed and meet me by the tall grass!" Then he sped off like he was being chased by a pack of Mightyenas. I guess I better just do what he says. I threw on a clean pair of shorts, pulled on a purple T-shirt, grabbed my bright blue bucket hat, stepped into my sneakers, and headed downstairs. I expected to run straight into my mom and dad cooking breakfast, but instead was greeted by dad's slaking, asleep, and gripping a piece of paper. I tried to slide the paper out of it's rather large hands, and then it moved. I just barely grabbed the paper and leaped out of the way in time for slaking to use hammer arm on the area of floor I was just standing on. Slaking started to wake up, so I am going to slip outside of the house before a tired Slaking directs it's hammer arm towards me on purpose. Once I got outside I unfolded the paper and began to read, "Dear Collin, your father and I took a gogoat taxi, and headed to jubilife city to sort out some business, please don't let our absence stop you from going and getting your Pokemon, it is an important day for you and you deserve it. Happy birthday, son. -Mom." I wonder what business they need to sort out in Jubilife? I'll ask when they get back. Now I need to meet Jack, and go see what this whole, "having you own pokemon" thing is all about.
Jack and I walked through route 201 without to much trouble, the most we ran into was a couple peaceful bidoofs. When we got to Sandgem town we went straight to the professor's lab, which wasn't too hard to find, since it was the first building we saw. The lab was pretty simple, with some computers and equipment, and scientists working on things. We saw Professor Rowan talking on the phone to someone and looking rather annoyed. He saw us come in, finished his phone call, and called into the other room, "Hey, Dawn, could you grab those starter pokemon, there on the second shelf." A beautiful, soothing voice came from the other room, "No need to worry, Professor. I found them." She came into the main lab and I was stunned. She had long blue hair, a cute black and pink dress, pink boots, and little red scarf. She looked over towards me and Jack, smiled at us, and brought over a silver suit case. "So, you two must be here for your starter pokemon.", Dawn said to us. I couldn't move, speak, or do anything. They way Jack always got when our neighbor Susan said hello to us, when we were playing ball. He had the biggest crush on Susan, and I never understand why he got like that. At least not until now. Thankfully Jack cut in before the silence got too long and awkward, "Actually today is Collin's 14th birthday, mine is next week, I am just here for moral support." " Oh, I see, well then after the professor tells you a couple things, you can choose one. Um, are you alright. Collin? You're just staring blankly at me. It's kind of creepy. Jack, does he do this often." "Not usually." He nudged me in the arm. I snapped back, "Oh, um, sorry. I just sort of zoned out. You are just so pretty, I mean isn't this lab pretty. These floor tiles are just amazing. How about we talk to Professor Rowan?" Dawn giggled then said, "I think that's a good idea." The professor had a strong presence and seemed very passionate about pokemon. He gave a whole speech about protecting and living as one with pokemon. Then Dawn opened up the case that contained three pokeballs. They all opened at once and appeared right in front of me. Rowan pointed at the first one, "This is Turtwig, a grass type." I thought it looked a little weird, but interesting. "This is Chimchar, a fire type." Now that is a cool pokemon, fire tail, tough build, and awesome. ",and this is Piplup, a water type." Oh my snorlax. It was perfect. Cute, and it seemed pretty tough. "I choose this one. I think it's the best out of the three." Turtwig and Chimchar turned their heads in annoyance, and Piplup jumped into my arms, and squealed with delight. Rowan gave a big smile, "A fine choice young man, would you like to give her a name?" Hmm. What would be a could name for a female piplup? Hmm. I got it. "I am going to call her, Sammy." "Squee!", said Sammy, as she gave me a hug. "I think she likes it.", Dawn said with a smile. Rowan stooped down and handed me Sammy's Pokeball, "Take her pokeball, and always remember to take care of her, and stand with your pokemon. I would also like to ask something of you Collin, and you Dawn." Dawn and I responded in unison, "What is it?" Jack ran into the conversation from behind me, "Hey what about me?!" Rowan responded calmly, "Once you get your Pokemon you may join in on this mission as well, young man. What I want you three to do is complete this pokedex for me, you will have to travel around the pokemon world seeing all kinds of pokemon and growing stronger yourself. Will you do this for me?" Jack and Dawn both nodded, but I need a little more time to think. They were all looking at me expecting an answer. I didn't want to travel, I just wanted to write stories at home, but then I looked down at Sammy, who was clinging to my chest. She looked up at me with those adorable eyes. Maybe I could write on the road, while exploring a new path as well. One with Sammy and any other pokemon I encounter. "I'll do it." Dawn shouted, "Whoo! Hoo!" and gave me a big hug. It was a warm and nice hug, but unfortunately Sammy was caught between us and got a little squished. When Dawn let go, me and Sammy were both stunned. By the time Jack and I got to the door, Dawn had apologized and hugged us about twenty times. Since my crush on Dawn was getting stronger, and I really wanted to stay and talk to Dawn more, Jack and Sammy had to drag me out of that lab. Dawn shouted after us, "Bye Collin, I hope to see you sometime soon." Jack smirked, "Hear that Collin." "Shut up Jack."
That is how my adventure began, and even as we walked back to Twinleaf town, I looked down at Sammy waddling at by my feet. I knew the best was yet to come.
