Letters From London

Spare button lover
Calico cat
Coats are for cover
When worn like that

Shoulder-round splendor
Hangs to the knees
The wearer and mender
Wears it to please

Rain slick city street
Edge of the town
Well timed city beat
Drops run sewer-bound

Apple blossom bough
Crumbling gifts
Gloved receiver now
Lifts for a whiff

Black gloved fingers trot
Marble- the bar
Between men deep in thought
And cold reservoir

Black booted steps tread
Lakeside pathway
Puddles happily fed
By the melting day

And lazily round
Flick calico eyes
Pocket gloves, push them down
She's in for a surprise..

Scarves and up-do's
Trunk full of clothes
Little white shoes
For her little white toes

That sink in the puddles
Click over stone
Mottled and muddled
And walking alone.

Quiet and fox-nosed
Hands folded (they're cold)
Archways on water, posed
Pray the bridges will hold

Forever they'll trope
Through this pale citadel
Somewhere in Europe
Envelope, inkwell

Bare legs and white gloves
White coat round the waist
Belt buckle she tugs
Land approaching with haste

Off the bridge she steps
Marigold-lipped, her sigh
Pins and needles digress
Taxi? Raining sky

Wind works strands fair
Lips purse and blow
Realign her hair-
Down the road.. a shadow?

As spare buttons do
He holds out his hand.

Little white shoes
Start to run at command.

Marigold-lips
Breaking open in joy-
Alleyway dips
All part of his ploy

And rain tumbles down
The lane she careens
Laughter, fingers found
Outstretched. Black coat seams

Caught in her white fist
To lover, love leaps
His hands strong, his wrists
Through lovers love seeps

Through coats like the rain
She's lifted so far
The well-timed refrain
Aloft in his arms

Been weeks and been months
Time's not waterproof
And it melts away once
Gutters fill, splash the roofs

Run down the bridge
Soaking white shoes
Cold on closed eyelids
Buttons and blues

Oh sweet calico
Lowers his love
Kiss her rightly so
This city tastes of

Her marigold pleasure
Content and divine
Her spare button treasure
Untarnished by time

Hands and lips clasping
And the rain grey
Bridges collapsing
Tumble down day

Breath comes in bouquets
Long-lasting, perfumed
Statuesque embrace
Lovers marooned

In the warmth of the other
Each other's sleeves
Each other's shudders
And pockets and decrees

So it shall rain forever
In that leap, in that kiss
In that moment, endeavor
In that black and white bliss.

Now, white gloves relax
Shoulders shiver twice

Pull apart but not back
Keeping close and precise

Wondering gaze
Return to the world

Spring-shower haze
Gloved fingers curled

Cherish her forehead
Temple, rosé cheek

How she adores when
His fingertips peek

About the corner
Of her round little ear

Could she be warmer
His marigold-dear

Standing on tiptoes-

Oh give us one more!

Again his smile grows

And just one more before

She traces her way
Down the black collar coat

He gives her skirt a shake
Upon breezes it floats

The sun will come anew
But they will be gone.
Down the stone avenue

Leaving his letters

Her x's and o's

(Hand in hand) to lie sodden awaiting the dawn.
