She had one last look at that lifeless face, still bearing the laugh lines, before they lowered the coffin into the mud.
He had been suffering for two years from lung cancer,and soon it spread to other vital organs, leaving the 50 year old senior executive with very little time left. The last week passed in a blur of hospital beds, bills, loans of all kinds, and lots of sleepless nights.
"In memory of Adam Isaac Newster. Born: 18-10-1965 Died: 7-08-2015" read the cold marble grave stone telling those who wouldn't care less about her beloved father's death.
Not a tear sprang from Nina's eyes as she watched all the relatives who were never really around now weep over the newly laid stone covering the body of a wonderful man.
At a distance,Jenny Adam, her mother, sat silently; the bags under her eyes along with the uncombed hair speaking volumes about her grief. It was pretty apparent that she hadn't done much than cry in the past two days.Julienne and Jeremy, her best friends came and sat beside her, their silence meaning a lot more than the bedlam surrounding them.
Friends from school,teachers, neighbors and family passed as a mass of black in front of Nina's eyes, as black as she imagined her once colorful life to now be. Good grades, friends,popularity, looks, she had it all. But what was once life was now shattered into a million pieces , making it just as real as a dream.She laid the white peonies, her father's favorite flowers, on the cold stone before walking back to her mother.
After the service and a few speeches by her uncles and her father's business partner , she was more than relieved to leave the church, to leave behind the pain.The only person who Nina could let her heart out to, the only one to whom she was ninny was gone. Her father was gone.
At 17 years, Nina had never had to ask twice for anything she needed. Her father had been her guiding figure and now she felt lost. She realised that it would not be too soon before she will have to start working in his company and that reminded her of one of their last conversations. And she had made a terrifying promise...Please vote, comment and share the story if you liked it.
