Curled up in a corner of the cold unwelcoming wagon Esmae Lilliad watched the beams of light dance across the wooden planks. Trees- just beginning to grow back the leaves from the horrid winter, they seemed to laugh at her as the wind shook them, mocked her for being so reckless.
She let her head rest against the rotting wooden wall, listening to the clink of her shackles, the sing-song of birds, the numerous guards and their lively chatter, just as if they weren't escorting a criminal, just as if they escorting measly peasants. Oh how stupid they are, just because she looked young and innocent certainly didn't mean that she was. Her stomach growled faintly but she learned to deal with the hunger it was obvious they had orders not to kill her, but nothing about starving her as they hadn't fed her in two days except for the measly crust of bread.
While in the wagon she was vaguely aware of the time passing other then the difference between the haunting night where all she had to keep her company were her thoughts, and the day where she could listen to pointless chatter and contemplate how she would escape if ever the chance appeared. However even when the bright day came to greet her the dark still lingered, reminding her why she was here, if only she'd thought it through she wouldn't be here and Adriana would still be breathing. Adriana –it still hurt Esmae when she thought of her, she could never wake up turning over to see her sleeping face, never see her cool blue eyes...or were they a dull blue? How can someone who meant the world to be fade from my mind so quickly? She should be crying, mourning her loss of her one and only lover, but she didn't. There was just silence, nothingness. She was ripped up, but there was always glue. She was Esmae Lilliad and she will not be broken, just ripped, because you can fix a rip. The silence never left Esmae though, even when she managed to close her eyes, when she stared blankly but hatefully at the guards who watched the wagon from behind, even when she sang softly to herself to try to keep the silence away.
Silence- complete absence of sound, in this case though it was the result in the absence of caring. Soon 2 days turned into three and then to four. Until one day the carriage just stopped and it was eerily quiet. Curiously Esmae weakly lifted her head and sees the guard talking with other guards and a wooden box chained to the horses and there seemed to be faint crying coming from the box. The guards exchange some more words then the box is unchained and the horses and men ride off while her guards begin to open up the box. Then the crying ceases then strings of colorful curses and threats to decapitate the guard's heads but suddenly she goes limp in the guard's arms when she meets Esmae gaze. Esmae looks back at her with complete horror and disbelief, she was looking directly and Adriana, but she was dead. Esmae saw the body, but never the wounds that caused Adriana's death.
"No, no, no! You're supposed to be dead! I saw you! You were cold as ice and dead! You had no pulse!" Esmae says her voice slowly rising to a scream. The guards turn to look at Esmae in tremor then one sighs,
"Great we got two prisoners who know each other and one wagon," he says his voice tired. Two guards grab Adriana by the ankles then under her arms and throw her into the wagon and she lands in a pile of scratchy hay. Esmae crawled over weakly to Adriana still in shock that her best friend, her lover, the one she shared her deepest secrets with was still alive, no kidding Esmae was over whelmed with happiness, the shock, the emptiness, the silence killed that happiness. The reality of losing her was too much to bear and Esmae terminated any hope of every being happy again, so she sought out revenge not caring how reckless she was. Looking back now she wished she were careful. She should've of known better that it was a trap. But she was overwhelmed with grief. So when Esmae looked at Adriana- her Adriana her heart filled with hate at the reminder that the girl on the hay next to her was the reason she was on her way to die.
"Get up," she hisses at Adriana her voice full of venom. Adriana opens up her eyes looking up at Esmae. Her eyes were a piercing blue, unforgiving at times but also unable to resist.
"I'm so sorry," she replies staring up at Esmae her eyes full of sorrow, "this was never meant to happen, you weren't supposed to fall in love with me, and I wasn't supposed to fall in love with you." Esmae pushes the hair that fell in front of Adriana's face.
"But we did...and I don't regret a moment of it, well except the part where you faked your death," she replies sweetly but then rudely. Adriana laughs slightly but winces.
"Help me up, will you?" She asks Esmae not able to do so on her own. She nods and carefully pulls her up, dragging her as softly as she could so Esmae was leaned up against the wood while Adriana was leaning against her chest and Esmae closed her eyes resting her chin on Adriana's head. She could finally sleep now that the emptiness and silence had gone.
Adriana blinks squinting her eyes as she weakly wipes the sleepiness from her eyes and turns to look up at Esmae who slept peacefully leaning against the wall, Esmae's face looks tired, too tired for being just 17.
She was shown the cruelty and evil in the world to early in her life when her parents left her in the streets to fend for herself at 13, but hey, nobodies perfect...and that's when Adriana's cousin found Esmae. They became friends, and three years ago that friendship turned into something more. Esmae shifts slightly opening her eyes look down at Adriana; her eyes- Esmae eyes were tired but alive with all the suffering she'd seen but harden as well with the suffering.
"I have a plan," Adriana whispers looking up at Esmae with hope in her eyes, "we can escape, be free, go where no one knows us, we can start over" Starting over. Esmae's mind went wild with that thought; she wanted to start over so much that it hurt.
"And what is this plan of yours?" Esmae looks down smiling excitedly but also mischievously. The though of escaping set her nerves wild.
"Well, the guards aren't as talented as they think...lets just say I have something important of there's," she says pulling out the keys to the lock on the door. Esmae's eyes widen in shock.
"When did you snatch those, I was watching you the whole time!" Esmae said sitting up, "we really could start over." Adriana nods and carefully stands up and Esmae follows. They crawl to the front wagon, stupidly all the guards were now in front of them and couldn't see anything they were doing. Adriana sticks her hand out holding the keys and shoves a key into the lock jiggling it around. Silently the lock clicks and the door swings open. Esmae grabs Adriana's hand and squeezes it.
"Once we jump and start running, run like death itself is chasing you," Adriana whispers. Esmae nods.
"One, two, three," Esmae whispers, then they both jump landing on the hard dirt ground rolling. Recovering, they get up and break into a sprint. One guard notices them running and yells to the other guards, and then the arrow is released.
