Damian heaved the last bag into the trunk of the large Volkswagen, then shut it tightly. "Hey Lexi, do we really need to bring twelve bags of chips?" He asked, walking over to the driver's door and getting in.
"Are you serious with that question? Duh! This a four day trip and I plan on eating chips at every meal," she retorted.
"You both disgust and amuse me, Alexandra," he said with an impressed nod.
"Why, thank you, Dami."
Damian smiled at her and started the van, and within two days they had gone from LA, California, to Parker, Arizona.***
"We're here," Damian said softly, shaking Lexi awake from the bed in the van she had been sleeping in.
She opened her eyes slightly, getting used to the light. "We are?" She asked in a morning voice.
"Yup," he replied, smiling at her.
She returned the smile and crawled out of the bed. He helped her out of the van and together they looked at the sunrise coming over the hoodoos in the distance.
"This is beautiful," Lexi said, getting up on top of the van for a better view. "Come up here and look, Dami."
Damian got up onto the van and sat next to her. "You're right, it's even nicer up here. But it's so hot already."
"Yeah, it's so much dryer than California. And it's worse if you're used to New York air."
"Yeah, this must be a huge change for you, moving down south."
She shrugged. "New York's too stressful. And expensive. Besides, none of my friends lived up there."
"Well, I'm glad you moved so close. Then we get to do fun stuff like this."
She smiled and wrapped her arms around him. "I love you."
"I love you too, Alexandra."***
After having a hardy dinner of Doritos and Coca-Cola, Lexi climbed into the back of the van and covered herself with the duvet on the bed. She had come back early from exploring and was waiting for Damian to return, which he still hadn't. Worried about his whereabouts, she decided to investigate.
"Damian?" She called as she got out of the van. "Dami, are you back yet? Where are you?"
She looked around the campsite everywhere, but there was no sign of him. Until she noticed something sitting by the lake. As she neared the lake, she recognized the figure as her best friend, and she ran up to him.
"Damian! Where did you..." she stopped mid-sentence when she looked down and noticed he was in nothing but his boxers. Team Fortress Two boxers.
She broke out into laughter. "Are those... are those TF2 boxers?! Oh my gosh, you absolute nerd!"
"Hey," he pulled his shorts back up, turning pink. "I was just going for a dip and didn't wanna get my clothes wet. Can we get over this now? Please? It's not like you don't own..."
"Don't say it."
"...Frozen socks."
"Hey, they're one size fits all! And Frozen at least has decent animation," Lexi said, crossing her arms.
"Oh, you do not wanna start with me, Alexandra Margret. I could rant for hours."
And so he did. They argued about their obsessions for hours in the van, and fell asleep doing so. Arizona was a very interesting trip that sure to end the same way every year.
