There was once a man, aged a millennium or so, stuck in the midst of a war. The Time War. His hair was grey and his face had experience thoroughly written all over it. He was known all throughout his home planet of Gallifrey as an outlaw that cheated his way into being a Time Lord, along with his childhood best friend. Although as time grew on, they both grew apart, and he was on his own. He grew a love for the planet called Earth after being sentenced there for centuries. He had tried to pick up human companions only to find out that they failed him in one way or another. Now he was left with a hopeless situation of life or death for his entire planet. In order to get rid of the enemy Daleks, he would have to kill his whole planet, including the ruthless and heartless Time Lords. But that also meant innocent civilians would die at the hands of none other than that man himself. The drippy pang of the blood of his own kind would always be a reminder that he was the last of his kind. He would never forget.
The planet Gallifrey had inhabitants resembling humans, but most things about this species were extremely different. People didn't age very fast, and if they were ranked a Time Lord, they were granted 12 regenerations, which they tried to use wisely. However, this man had already cheated regeneration as he currently was in his 14th form. Gallifreyans also had two hearts, and they were far more advanced than humans. Their brains were magnanimous compared to most species. They had famous technology for defying the laws of time and space. They were an ancient species. But the Time Lords mainly had access to it and they were mainly cold-hearted and manipulative. No one liked a Time Lord. It wasn't a name to be proud of. Although most Time Lords thought it was.
This man was a curious sight. He got below average grades as a child. He was never going to be a Time Lord like his parents, who were ancient. He and his childhood best friend would run along dreaming of how they could get into this seemingly glorious rank up until the age of 8. That year, they were told to stare into the time vortex. His friend received a never ending ticking noise for the rest of his life. And his friend also went insane. But he on the other hand, would never tell anyone what he had seen. All he knew was that the Time Lords were evil, and he wanted to change that. His parents always got disappointed in him. They could never stand how fearful he was of so many seemingly small things. His fears never did truly go away. But over the years, he learned to suppress them. He never told anyone why, but it was kind of a sudden thing. He grew up to steal a Time And Relative Dimension In Space, which his consequential granddaughter had shortened to TARDIS. It was a Time Lord machine that he stole, and he never gave it back. And that is how he became a Time Lord. He was clever. He grew up to fly around in it, exploring the universe and saving all sorts of aliens along the way. But then there came the time where he had to destroy his entire planet in order to stop the Daleks and Time Lords alike. There came a last day where he said "no more". But no one knew what he had done before he blew up the planet. If there was one thing he could do, it was to save the civilian children of Gallifrey. But he consequently only ended up finding a few orphan babies and a young girl who was crying and protecting them.
The man looked at the little girl. "What is your name?" he asked.
She looked at him scared. "I'm Elaine," she replied.
"Last name?" he asked.
She shrugged. "I don't know, but I know I'm Elaine."
For a brief moment, he stared at her. "It's funny. I know all the names of everyone on the planet, but somehow I don't know yours."
She faintly smiled. "Well, sir, I don't have parents."
He stared at her harder. "Do you know who I am?"
She shook her head. "Not really."
He summoned her to stand up. "I'm the Doctor. Or at least I used to be," he sighed. "I don't really know who I am anymore."
She stood up, holding a couple babies in her arms. There were dirt marks all over her. The war was not kind to her for shelter. "You're the rebellious Time Lord! I've always wanted to meet you!" Her eyes brightened.
He tried to smile with his tired, pain-stricken eyes, but he knew that what he was going to do would be something no one would like. But he thought for a moment. "Come into the TARDIS with me. Bring the infants too. And I will take you away from this place if you promise to never speak of me again." his old voice whispered.
She got in without hesitation, carrying two infants in one arm and two in another. And the man traveled to Earth and he went with them to find them homes. The first infant, he let Elaine carry, but he took the other three. He saw a young couple fighting at each other out on their doorstep, and he walked up to them and handed them one of the babies.
"What is the meaning of this!?" the lady shouted.
He looked at her. "It's quite obvious that this is exactly what you need."
Before she could say anything, he was walking away. He and Elaine walked along, and another old man like himself stopped him. They had a good chat, and he irrationally decided to give the old man the infant. The last infant, he gave up looking and he precariously left her on the doorstep of an old house.
Finally, Elaine spoke up, still clutching the male infant. "Why would you just give babies away like that!?"
The Doctor sighed. "I'm in a hurry, and it was the best I could do." He started to walk away.
"Wait!" young Elaine chased after him. "You're leaving!?"
He sighed. "I have to." He looked at her for one last time. "Do me a favor, and just forget about me. Find yourself a family and make sure you find the right people."
And with that, he stepped into the TARDIS and flew away. Since then, he participated in two great wars. The important one for now would be the Time War, in which he returned and destroyed his entire planet shortly after he dropped the children off at earth. The only reason he continued to live on was because he remembered the people that he did save. He hoped they would live lives well on Earth. For centuries he would wonder what happened to the last children of Gallifrey, while his guilt raged on like a burning fire.
