quick AN: this has been in my drafts forever and ever and while i'll definitely continue it some day that might be a ways off

Gwen was waiting. She wasn't exactly sure what she was waiting for, but the feeling had come upon her while she was trying to sleep. It had been a slow and heavy feeling, and she knew that the forest felt it as well. She wondered absently if she was about to wake up, and then decided that she would know if she were.

No, she was waiting for something else, and despite the fact that time was nonexistent here she did wish it would hurry up. Life had become terribly boring in the years (days? weeks, months, centuries?) since she had fallen into her cursed sleep.

Time, or the lack of it, dragged on and Gwen began to drift. Drifting was the closest she could ever get to sleeping here, and it was a welcome distraction. This time as she drifted she saw the old portrait of her mother that had hung in the library before the new Queen came to the castle. The memory of the portrait was dim and frayed and she wanted to get closer to it. However, before she could drift any further there was a loud crash accompanied by the rustle of leaves and loud swearing. Gwen's eyes snapped open and she stood suddenly, her eyes darting around the clearing.

Before she could say anything a girl tumbled out of the bushes next to Gwen and into the clearing.

"Hello!" the girl exclaimed brightly as Gwen stared down at her bemusedly.

"Would you please give me a hand? I'm afraid I'm rather clumsy." Gwen laughed at that.

"I wouldn't mind at all," she said as she grabbed the girl's hand and heaved; the girl stumbled and flailed, but remained upright. Laughing breathlessly, she shook Gwen's hand heartily.

"My name is Princess Rose of Merid, Kingdom of the Sea." She grinned toothily at Gwen.

"You can call me Rose, if you want." Gwen blinked. Well. This ought to be interesting.
