Earth is the birth-place of mankind. But, Earth still has a limited amount of natural resources and because we've used vast quantities of those resources and continue to do so, they will eventually run out, and because of this, the people of Earth were plunged into World War III.
Many factors played into the beginning of World War III. At the beginning, Russia's need for power, land, and of course, natural resources, (such as oil) grew significantly. Russia first began by invading and occupying countries that had belonged to the Soviet Union before it fell and all the territory lost during World War II. Then, they invaded Afghanistan again and as a result, U.S. forces were pushed out of Afghanistan and within two years, the Russian military had wiped-out virtually every terrorist cell, and with it, about 70% of the countries population. During this time, Russia now successfully occupies every country that had belonged to the old and dissolved Soviet Union, as well as Afghanistan and Pakistan. As a result, the New Soviet Union was established.
In another world superpower, China's greed and want to control has become a global threat. In the past and even today, many world superpowers are dependent on China for production and its massive industry. When natural resources began running low, China quickly took advantage of the situation and their greed grew drastically. China also used this time to invade and successfully occupy Japan and also became allies with Russia and North Korea. As a result, the UN and NATO countries grew very agitated with both China's and Russia's actions. But, even though it wasn't through better circumstances, the actions of China and Russia, did help to the strengthen the alliance between the UN and NATO.
No one knows who is responsible, but on September 2, 2056, World War III had begun. Three Nuclear Warheads decimated Moscow, the Capital of Russia. After that, every country began launching their nuclear weapons against their enemies.
I was nine-teen years old when it happened. If I remember correctly, the United States had about 52 confirmed nuclear detonations. At least fifty two of them were on Washington D.C.
I remember that I was in New York City and a nuclear missile was heading right for the city. Then a military jet, U.S. Air Force, went towards the missile at what appeared to be maximum velocity and rammed into the nuclear missile, destroying the missile and sacrificed their own life, saving New York City from the Nuclear Apocalypse. I have never forgotten the day, that our once, glorious planet, was lost to nuclear fire.
Nine years have passed since that dreaded day. We were fortunate enough to have had many different sciences survive. Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, and Astronomy were considered the most important sciences in this new 'modern era'. We knew that we had to start getting more key natural resources, resources which are either very scarce or non-existent. So, we had to look towards the stars. Before the war, we had already begun colonizing the moon, but all colonies and everyone in them were destroyed. But, the resources on the moon weren't what we are after. Before the war, we had managed to obtain a substantial amount of Helium-3 from the moon and large amounts of it still remain from after the war. We are after precious metals, certain elements; ones that would be found on a planet in large quantities, unlike the moon.
We first looked towards Mercury, but we knew right away; bad idea. Our attention is now directed towards Venus; Earth's 'sister' planet. My story begins in the building where all the top scientists meet and discuss future plans.
