Chapter one
Gavin sat on a swing on his preschool playground: the sun was shining, they just had snack time, everything was great in his life. Young boys and girls ran about the playground laughing and smiling. Amidst the swarm of children, he then spotted his best friend and waved, "Michael! Come swing with me!" Michael grinned, then sprinted toward him. Gavin watched as his friend ran excitedly, nearly tripping over himself midway. Michael plopped down into the swing beside Gavin.
"I didn't know that you would be back today. How was your trip back home?" Michael questioned, giving himself a push.
"Fun! I got to see grandma and grandpa. Oh, I got to see Dan too!" The British boy beamed at the other.
"That kid that you use the computer to talk to all the time?"
"Yeah!" Gavin smiled enthusiastically, "yeah, that's him."
Michael looked up at the sky and sighed, "I wish I could travel as much as you do."
Gavin looked first to Michael knowingly, then followed his gaze to the pristine blue sky. "We could always go somewhere, you doughnut." The boy spoke jokingly, but at the same time, he spoke with a degree of truth and longing.
"I know but you get to go across the ocean and I'm stuck here with stupid woods and churches." Michael pouted as he gave himself an extra push of anger.
Kicking at the ground a few times to give himself a push, Gavin began to swing alongside his now agitated friend. "The woods are still pretty fun to explore." Gavin half mumbled in defeat.
At that Michael smiled half-heartedly, "Yeah, you're right. You want to do that when we go home?"
"Would I!" Gavin asked redundantly, giving the other a bright dopey grin.
After scanning Gavin's face for a moment, Michael suddenly exclaimed, "surprise jumping contest!" With that, the boy jumped from his swing, landing halfway to the barrier separating the swingsets' sandy floor from the rest of the playground. Gavin yelped at the sudden competition, and flung himself gracelessly from his own swing. He landed face first into the sand with a soft grunt.
"I win!" Michael smiled then picked up a stick to mark where he had landed before he went back to his swing.
"No fair!" Gavin laughed, standing himself up and sweeping the sand from his body. The teacher on the other side of the playground stood up from her folding chair and rang a small bell, calling all the children inside.
Gavin was mid protest when he heard the bell. "Race you to class!" Gavin yelled, immediately tripping over himself. Michael laughed as he quickly ran by, jumping over the barrier only to trip and fall as well. Gavin scrambled to his feet, and began a swift pace. "Come on, you silly sausage!" Michael hopped up as well and rushed to the door.

School went by quickly, and Michael's mother came to sign the two boys out. They lived next door, so the arrangement worked perfectly.
They arrived at Michael's house in under ten minutes, and once there, Michael decided to ask his mother if he and his friend could go on an adventure.
"Hey Mom?" Michael asked, "Can Gavin and I go play in the woods for a little bit?"
She thought for a moment, "Sure. Just don't wander too far away from the house and be sure to put on bug spray, you know how bad ticks and mosquitoes are right now."
