I brace myself as the gun sounds, ready for the bullet to take my life.
The pain never comes.
I slowly open my eyes, to find my best friend on the ground, a wound in his stomach.
Dave took the bullet.
I let out a small sound of terror, flying to his side, tears already rolling down my face as he lifts his hand weakly, staring at the blood on it.
My best friend is dying.
My boyfriend shot him.
"Dave! Dave!" I sob, frantically pressing my hands against the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.
He turns his head slightly, his beautiful brown eyes focus on me. The slightest trace of a smile is on his face, as he looks up at me. "Rose," he pauses, coughing. The wound in his stomach only seems to be growing, despite all my efforts.
"Rose, stop, it's okay," he says breathlessly, touching my hand.
I let out a small sob, looking at his face, which is already draining of color.
"Rose," he croaks out, his eyes never leaving mine. "I love you," he had to pause, gasping for air, the hole in his stomach not getting any smaller. "I've always loved you," he whispered breathlessly, wiping a tear from my face, ever so gently.
I never knew he loved me.
But looking back... I don't know how I didn't...
