“Audrey Layna, I figured it would turn into a game of tag. I must say I’m quite-“he started, but was cut off by the feeling of flying backwards into the wall two yards behind him. He found himself inches away from her face, the katanas making an X shape, and pinning him against the wall by his neck.

“Who are you?” she demanded, her deep, alto voice emerging in a low and dangerous growl. When she spoke, he got a quick glimpse at her teeth, which relieved cat like fangs on both her lower and upper teeth. This gave the ghostly figure and even more cat like appearance. His heart hammered in his chest. He had expected an aggressive confrontation, not getting his head cut off. If her gaze wasn’t terrifying, her behavior was. He swallowed.

“My name is Roy, Roy Karamat, and I have not come here to fight,” he said nervously.  This woman was certainly the last person he wanted to cross. Her eyes showed no change. Her venomous gaze stayed locked on his eyes. ‘Sonya, you own me big time’ he thought, praying that he would be allowed to keep his head on his shoulders.

Audrey could clearly see the terror in his eyes. She didn’t believe him when he said he didn’t want to fight, but she decided to back down for a little to see if she could get anything out of him. He wore a soldier’s uniform, but it wasn’t well kept. It was cut and torn, and parts of the grey fabric were black with grime. The belt and quiver were worn and heavily used. It was required that all soldiers keep themselves as clean and presentable as possible. She had heard stories about some of them getting executed over stains and lose threads. So why was this one in such poor condition? She thought for another moment.

“If I let you go, you are required to answer all my questions, and answer them truthfully. That is unless you want to be the new headless horsemen,” she hissed, bringing her face only an inch or so away from his. He shrunk back as she did so, which told her that her point had successfully gotten across. She removed the swords from the wall and let him drop to the ground. He got to his feet and cleared his throat.

“Consider me an open book,” he said. Despite the strength in his baritone voice, she could hear the fear it concealed. She interrogated him thoroughly, asking everything she could think of that was vital. From his story, he had been born to Class 3, the wealthy, and was shipped off to be a loyal soldier. At first he thought that the world was fine, but upon meeting another rebel named Sonya Bianca, realized how poorly things really were. When he inquired about a commander’s order to attack a group of civilians, he was accused of disobedience and forced into a reform program. He had escaped with the help of Sonya and decided to join the revolt. Apparently, Sonya was the one who told him to hunt her down.

“I left the threatening note so you would pay close attention to it, making our chances of meeting more likely,” he explained. “My apologies for frightening you,” Audrey straightened out, enraged by the last comment.

“You obviously didn’t read what I wrote. I fear nothing, and I especially don’t fear an exiled soldier!” she spat, knowing the word ‘exiled’ would cut through him like a knife. He stood still and silent for a moment, not knowing how to respond.

“Then I am sorry for angering you,” he finally said. Audrey grunted in response, obviously unimpressed. Roy signed and ran his hand through his hair, the other resting on his hip. “Look, I don’t even know you, ok. And honestly, I’m not so sure that I want to ask questions about you cause I actually like having a head on my shoulders. The only reason I know your name is because Sonya told me, though I have no clue how she knew. She wants you to meet her at our camp. She said that we need you and your camp members to join us if the government is ever going to learn anything,” he said as he stepped forward. Audrey immediately took this as a threatening gesture and jumped back into a fighting stance again, her eyes blazing in the darkness. Roy raised his hands and stepped back to where he previously stood.
