The school office was sterile looking. With timid, white, grey walls and a large, white desk in the centre, the room looked like it belonged in a hospital ward, rather than a school. A few students had walked in and out of the office; collecting notices and handing up documents. From what I could see from the students that had been in the office, it looked as though they kept to themselves. Hopefully, the rest of the student body was like this.
Walking up to the lady at the desk, I told myself to toughen up and appear confident.
“Good morning my dear, how may I help you?” The office lady said. She had thick, brown hair, small green eyes hidden behind rounded glasses and a warm smile.
“Um, hello. My name is Jane Capris. Today is my first day. I was wondering if Mrs Knowles was available.” I remember what my mother had told me to say.
The lady looked surprised, a very large smile stretched over chubby face.
“Jane! Well haven’t I been waiting to meet you! I’m Mrs Knowles. Welcome to Helton Private High School!” Mrs Knowles cheerfully sang, shaking my hand and the same time.
“Thank you. My mother told me to speak to you when I first arrived. Is that correct?”
Mrs Knowles looked at the square clock mounted on the wall behind her, and then back to me. “Yes, thank you for coming a bit earlier. Now, your mother and I have had a lovely chat about you starting at Helton Private, and you seem like such a wonderful girl to have the privilege to attend this school.”
“I’m looking forward to it.” I almost mumbled back to her ten times unenthusiastically as how she had just spoken to me.
Mrs Knowles looked at me as if she knew that I was not serious one bit about what I had just said. She looked down at her desk and filed through some sheets of paper. Guessing she finally found the sheet she was looking for, she placed it in her hands.
Handing the sheet over to me, she said, “You don’t seem to keen about this don’t you? It’s ok, I am so very sure you will love it here! Now here on this sheet of paper, I have marked your classes and attached a map of the school. If you get lost, just ask a student or teacher for directions, they won’t bite!” she paused for a moment, “Ok, I can’t keep you for too long, but when you get to your homeroom just introduce yourself to the teacher and explain you are a new student.”
It all felt too surreal. I didn’t want to listen to this woman. I wanted to rebel against what she was saying. I just wanted to leave this stupid place and go home. I could feel the blood rushing out of my face, since I really didn’t want anything to do with a homeroom nor a stupid, private school.
“Oh, dear me, I bet you are wondering how to get to your homeroom. Ok well follow the corridor outside the office doors straight, and it’s the fifth classroom on the left.”
“Ok” was all I could say to her directions.
Turning around from the desk to walk out, I felt the slightest prick of tears form at the corner of both of my eyes. If I started to cry, seriously, I would shoot myself right there and then. Trying to blink back the tears, I took three large breaths. Each breath, kicking a sense of reality into me, told me to mature up and move on.
