The humming bird circled the tree and landed upon a soft pink flower. But rather than flitting about and sucking up the sweet nectar from the bud, it merely stopped and perched upon the delicate petals. It's face was directed towards the window from which I carefully observed the scene.
"Char? What do you think?" A nearby voice spoke up. I turned quickly from the small creature and towards the table filled with impatient girls waiting for a reply. Except for Hannah, of course, the one who had given the question and my best friend of seven years.
"Sorry. What?"
"Always in your own world." She chuckled and my cheeks heated from the slight embarrassment. "I was asking what you thought about going to Jack's party tonight? We've all been talking about how it's definitely going to be one of his biggest yet." She gestured with her hands animatedly.
I shrugged. She knew I wasn't a huge party girl, but she also knew of my obsessive-like crush on Jack Young since the seventh grade.
"Come on. It will not be the end of the world. It may just be the start of a brand new one." Hannah wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.
~~
Eventually she convinced me, like she always does and before I knew it, I was in the car, riding with Hannah on the way to this god-awful party.
She had the speakers blasting and the car shaking. So, to get rid of some nerves, I sang along to the fast-paced music. By the time we pulled up to the house, we were both energized and ready to party.
I had temporarily forgotten my nervousness on the walk to the front doors. I rang the doorbell eagerly, only to have Hannah shake her head and push the door open, not even waiting for permission. Once inside, the music was deafening and the walls, like Hannah's car were shaking.
People were everywhere and I mean everywhere. Some were in the kitchen, a few were in the hallway, but the majority of the party was in the basement where she led me now. I began to fade off into my own world while taking in the gyrating bodies and pulsating music in front of me. The basement was dark but you could tell it was huge. The only light came from a dim lamp in the corner of the room and a strobe light attached to the ceiling. As my eyes drank up the scene before me, I failed to realize the incoming body. We collided hard and both fell to the ground.
"My bad. Let me help you." A strong, rough hand pulled me up and I was met with apologetic blue eyes. I immediately was at a loss for words when I realized who the guy standing before me was. Jack Young.
"Yeah, um, it's okay. No bones are broken, no harm done." I nervously brushed my shorts with my hands and eyed Hannah as she danced with some random guy, oblivious to my current situation.
"That your friend?" Jack asked. I nodded and quickly broke eye contact with him.
"Really? You guys seem totally different." He laughed while I struggled to determine if his words were intended to be nice or not.
After a second or two of observing his party, he turned to me again. "Oh right, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Jack Young, the host of this fine party." He stuck out his hand and I timidly shook it.
"Charlotte Daniels."
"Do you go to our school?" I looked at him in legitimate shock. I was in three of his classes.
"You're serious?" His attractiveness went down a peg after that comment.
He gave me a puzzled face and stood there awkwardly before someone called him away.
Offended and slightly angered by his abrupt leave, I decided to cool off with a drink. My feet carried me up from the basement and into the kitchen, where a couple people were making out and a group of guys were hovering around the "punch" bowl.
"Excuse me." I muttered as I approached the counter. Without giving me a second glance they moved out of my way. I sighed and scooped some of the tainted liquid into a clear, plastic cup.
I took one sip and shuddered at the taste of alcohol running over my tongue. I drank a little more and let my feet carry me around. I dodged people here and there and stumbled upon some explicit scenes while I embarked on my journey around Jack's home. I figured that I had wasted away a good thirty minutes doing this.
Eventually after stumbling through one of Jack's many hallways, although this one was vacant, I plopped down into a chair in the dining room.
I had a full on view of the party, but no one could see me.
Silently, I sat and observed until my eyes began to drop with boredom.
I was on the verge of leaving without Hannah and just walking home, when the front door opened and in came two tall men, with all black outfits and face masks on. My eyes widened slightly. This wasn't a Halloween party. My brain thought. It wasn't until they both brought forth guns from their bags that I began to worry.
They lifted the weapons high above their heads and two shots rang high and clear through the house. No one was hit, for the gunmen had aimed up in order to scare everyone. A deep voice rumbled from the taller man of the two, "Everyone out! Now!"
He didn't have to repeat himself. I watched as shock descended to chaos. People fled from every direction. I seemed to be in another one of my dazes as the house cleared itself until at last my brain finally connected with the situation and I stood from the dining room chair, preparing myself to run.
The home was mostly empty by now So, I figured it would be a lot smarter to be quiet and not draw any unwanted attention toward me. I tiptoed around the table and beside the wall and almost made it to the front door when the two men began talking. I froze where I was and silently eavesdropped. I probably should have left earlier because now if I left I feared they would be alarmed and upset at my presence.
"Okay, now what?" One of the men removed his mask and revealed sandy, golden locks and bright blue eyes. I was surprised. He looked my age?
I crouched down behind a tall plant as they looked around to check their surroundings. Determining that the place was clear, the other guy took his mask off and an inaudible gasp fell from my lips. He was enchanting to say the least. His hair was a light brown and looked so soft, I wanted to run my fingers through it and his eyes were piercing green.
"Find the box and bring it to me. Hook has another thing coming if he thinks he can play games with me." The first boy ran off quickly to go find the box that he was told to find. The brown haired one turned to his right and walked down the same deserted hallway I was in minutes ago.
Taking this as my cue to leave I waited a second to make sure no one was coming back and bolted toward the door. My feet flew like the wind and turned into the foyer sharply. I could see the front door! I smiled as my fingers grasped the handle, but before I could escape, my body was pinned against the nearest wall. I gasped as I locked eyes with the last person I wanted to encounter.
"Now, where do you think you're going darling?"
