Jason's POV (age 10)

I sat up in bed. The aroma of french toast and bacon filled my nose.

I scrambled out of bed, pulling on and pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

I jumped down the stairs two at a time spotting my mom in the kitchen.

"Hey mom, I gotta leave for school soon" I said, pecking her cheek.

"Jason, honey I'll drive you. Alex already left anyway." She said, ruffling my hair.

I just nodded, sitting down, ready to consume my breakfast. My mom set down the food in front of me, giving me a warm smile.

I loved my mom, and if anything ever happened to her, I think I would die. She did everything for me. Even though I think I'm all tough, my mom showed me that I was still young. She's my whole life.

I got up, grabbing my backpack, and headed to the car.

She came out shortly after, fixing her skirt.

"Come on mom, were gonna be late" I complained.

"Jason, we are early. Just be patient" She said climbing in the Civic.

We pulled up in the parking lot.

I peeled off my seat belt, leaning over to peck my mom's cheek once again.

"Bye mom, I love you" I yelled, walking away.

"I love you too Jason, no matter what" she yelled back.

Little did I know, those were her last words.

*After school*

I walked slowly out of the pale yellow building, expecting my mom's familiar silver Civic.

Instead, I was greeted by a buff police officer holding a sign with my last name written in marker. I wonder what happened? Maybe Alex got in trouble again. I strolled over to him and he lead me inside the car.

"McCann?" He spoke with clarity, but I detected some...sympathy? Ok what happened?

I was starting to get worried. Maybe Alex got hurt. Maybe they just arrested him again. Then I thought of my mom and how she would handle this. Oh no. My mom.

"Mr. McCann, your mother died this morning at 9:27. Your were the last person to see her, do you know were she could've went?" he asked.

My mom? Dead? It can't be true. She was everything to me. Without her, I don't think I can survive. She's my strength, my hope, everything I could never be.
