Chapter 4
It was the day I was gonna go see World War Z with Zeke. It was right after school and Gabrielle had come home with me.
"I'm having second thoughts..." I said as we got in my room.
"Oh come on!" Gabrielle moaned. "Zeke's a great guy and it's not like it's a date!"
"Yeah I know but," I felt the all to familiar lump in throat that meant I was on the verge of tears. "I had planned to go with Luke." Gabrielle's face fell
"Oh Ryan." Her voice was breaking too. I fell to the bed. and cried into my pillow. Gabrielle got the message and left quietly.
"Ryan sweetie?" My mom walked in and sat on the bed. "Don't you have your movie tonight?" I looked at my phone through the tears. I still had an hour, but there was something I wanted to do first. I nodded and shooed her out so I could get dressed. I chose a blue polo and skinny jeans. I shook my hair around a bit to make it look better. I waved to my parents and got in to the car.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the way, I stopped at a small flower shop. I walked in and searched around for a bit.
"Going on a date?" The kind old woman who ran the shop asked.
"Kind of..."I said browsing the wide array of flowers that covered the walls. I decided on a bouquet of yellow tulips. Something bright. I payed and got back in my car. I reached the place where you turn onto the street with the theater. And turned the other way. Toward the cemetery.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke was buried near a beautiful oak tree. Flowers littered his grave from friends and family. It felt a little selfish, but I put mine right up front.
"Oh Luke." I sighed. "I miss you so much. I need you. Zeke invited me to a movie. World War Z. We were gonna go see that." I was watering the flowers with my tears. I checked my watch. If I left now, I'd make it. Except I couldn't. I couldn't go to a movie with someone so soon after Luke died. What was I thinking. I sat at the grave for a while longer, humming Be My Escape. Finally, I got in my car and drove home.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ryan? What are you doing home?" My dad asked as I walked through the door. "I thought you were going to a movie?"
"I couldn't..." I wiped my eyes and sat on the couch with my parents. "I went to Luke's grave." My mom put her arm around me and we all sat in silence for a little bit. An angry knock interrupted the sweet moment. My dad answered it.
"Where is Ryan..." Gabrielle was trying not to sound infuriated. I got up and went to the door.
"Here." I said waving at her. She dragged me to my room.
"Zeke just called me asking me if I knew where you were. Why did you stand him up?!."
"Because I went to Luke's grave and I remembered how we were gonna go together and I can't let him go so fast." I said, for once not crying.
"I'm so sorry Ryan, I know how hard this is. I miss him too." She started crying. Then I remembered something, Gabrielle knew Luke longer than I had. They had been friends since 1st grade.
"Oh Gabrielle I'm so sorry." I pulled her into a deep embrace. "I completely forgot how long you knew him. I'm the worst friend ever." I felt awful.
"Don't worry." She said her voice breaking.
"Tell me the story, of how you two met."
-------------------------------------FLASHBACK---------------------------------
11 YEARS EARLIER
"HEY GIVE THAT BACK!!" A young girl with long blonde hair yelled to a young boy who had taken her blue crayon. "I need it for my sky!" She said pointing to her crude crayon drawing.
"You're drawing outer space. There's no sky there." The boy said stubbornly. The girl just stuck her tongue out and snatched the crayon back. The boy laughed.
"Luke Tyler." He said extending his hand and grinning his missing tooth grin.
"Gabrielle Henry." The girl shook his hand vigorously.
"You're drawing is stupid." A much younger Jake Hanson approached the two new friends.
"Her drawing is not stupid. I bet you're just jealous." Luke stood up and faced Jake.
"Me? Jealous? You're funny kid." Jake walked away laughing.
"Kid?" Luke asked "We're the same age..." He sat down with a confused look on his face. Gabrielle giggled.
"You're funny. Let's be friends." She said smiling.
"Ok!!" He said. And they stayed that way until the day he died.
-------------------------------END-FLASHBACK-----------------------------------
"So Jake's been an asshole for that long?" I laughed through tears.
"You know it." She replied putting her head on my shoulder.
"Did Luke ever tell you we dated in seventh grade?" She laughed.
"He did actually. Didn't it only last about 2 weeks?" I couldn't contain my laughter.
"He came out the day after that!" Gabrielle burst out laughing. Then my phone rang.
"Hello?"
"It's Zeke." Shit.
