You lay there, eyes closed but mind racing. Through your eyelids, you could see the light streaming through your window, casting shadows in your room. A gentle blue light. You'd always figured it was a street light. A light slightly tinted the color of night. That's what you told yourself anyway.
You'd been waiting for sleep for so long, though your spirit knew no rest. Your life was just you trying to entertain yourself, as you wait for them. They'd talk with you, and touch you, and laugh with you when no one was watching. Your alleged 'friends'. Your friends who knew what snow looked like.
In your average sized home, you lived alone. You were taken away a long time ago, after you learned how to take care of yourself. You've grown up with the cameras watching your every move, though you knew it wasn't normal. You've read many, many books and stories, both on paper and on a screen, about the normal people. You were given a phone, a TV, and a computer in your living quarters, along with your bed, an empty bookshelf, dining table, and chair. Over time, you bought things for yourself online, with the money from the checks that appear in front of your door.
The silence was something you enjoyed. Even if at times, you'd find it suffocating. You spend time, just reading and living vicariously through vloggers.
Yes. It was a boring, lonely life.
That was until May 15.
A knock on your door.
No one ever knocked.
No one even knew of your existence. But yet you heard it, plain as day.
One.
Two.
Three.
Pause.
You pull back the curtains. Just a tad bit. There were two people. One a girl, and one a boy.
You analyze every feature. From every hair on their head, to the color of their nails.
The boy raises his hand to knock again.
One.
Two.
Three.
Stop.
Your breath hitches as they just stand there. The girl shifted her weight from one foot to the the other, constantly. The boy just stared at the door. Then, as if he felt your eyes burning into him, his head snapped in your direction. You pull back, but you were certain her already saw you. No point in hiding now.
You hesitantly unlatch the door, and peek outside.
The boy waves, a small circular motion, and the girl smiles brightly at you.
Weird. You could've sworn her eyes were blue.
"Hello there! [Y/N], right?"
