Never preach too much…
… If it’s difficult to practice!
Kosher was your normal city boy; complete with baggy jeans and the oversized t-shirt only at the age of nine and a half. He’s originally an Indian, but being brought up abroad, he hardly exhibited any Indian traits other than his black hair and eyes.
This vacation he is going to his grandparents’ house as usual; but without his parents. He wasn’t sure if it was going to work out for him, but his parents never gave him choices.
His grandparents adored him and loved him. He loved them in return. But he had other feelings. His grandmother was always talking about healthy food and gave lectures about how electronics are harmful to children. She was also very nagging and over-protective.
“Try this green curry. It’s full of fiber and minerals. You should also take the sambar; it has got 11 healthy vegetables in it: brinjal, carrot, potato, drumstick, onion, pumpkin, tomato-”
“You must stop playing computer games. I read in the newspapers how injurious to health it can be. You will lose focus and concentration and of course there are problems like obesity which can-”
Then of course his grandmother would comment on the most obvious things and try to teach us things we already know. Sometimes Kosher gets drained by grandma-talk that he walks away and shuts himself somewhere.
Worst part – grandma never practices what she preaches. At the end of the day, she eats the most and watches T.V. the most.
One day, Kosher was so consumed up with his grandma and fed up with her lectures that he got really cranky.
Grandma was just watching T.V. after a day full of lectures when Kosher said,
“Grandma! Why are you watching so much television? First of all, all the stories on T.V. you watch are predictable. Without watching more than a second of this serial, I know that this man is going to help that poor family there and soon get the poor girl’s hand in marriage. Besides, you know watching more than an hour of T.V. can be very injurious to grand mothers’ health, especially grandmothers with cataract. You will have to get glasses huger than those you have now, and your little nose may not even be able to support them. Besides, too much T.V. can also lead to accelerated memory and concentration loss. So why don’t you take some rest or do some Sudoku?”
Kosher’s grandmother was now cornered by her own lectures.
“You are correct. So wise of you Kosher,” said grandma and she retired to her bed. Kosher was pleased to have influenced granny.
For some time he was otherwise engaged, then after a five minutes he walked past the living room and found granny back on the sofa watching TV.
When granny noticed Kosher, she immediately said, “Please let me watch; I won’t advise you on TV matters ever again!”
