the other side

"Hey Slade wake up its light enough" said Connor, my little brother. I get up and walk to the bathroom. I look in the mirror and see the same brown hair, tan skin, and lime green eyes that I've always seen. I wash my face with water we keep in buckets because of course the faucets haven't worked in two years. Then I grab a fresh shirt, put it on, and head downstairs.

Our house was not damaged very much during "the start" and we still had everything pretty much the same except a few broken pictures and the shed out back was knocked down. We were on the other side of the country when it happened. And so not the earquakes nor the tidal waves got to us as bad. We were lucky. Luckier than most. And we were thankful. We had everything we could need and that was enough.

My dad was making breakfast. He only had strawberries, Apples, and oranges from the garden we had luckily planted only months before everything happened. The reason he only had these things was because I hadn't gone to check the snares we had set the day before. Me and my brother both grabbed an Apple and told dad that we would be back in a few hours. I then grabbed my sword that my dad had made me when I was 16. He made this sword differs then all the others. He had owned a sword shop before, but it was knocked down by a falling tree from the start. He called it "migi no gayness." Which meant something in Japanese but I was never sure what. This sword was made of a dark black looking metal, with a silvery handle that had the face of a wolf. I always carry it with me along with a few throwing knives and my brother takes his self made slingshot. We went into a wooded area that we knew would get us a few squirrels and maybe even a wild hog or two. I pulled out my throwing knives when I see two squirrels in one tree chasing each other. Me and my brother glace at each other and we somehow know that I will get the left one and he will get there right. I throw and my brother shoots and we both hit the squirrels dead on. They fall to the ground and we place them in our game bag. We are looking for more when we hear the undeniable sound of a wild hog. We had been hoping we would find one and so we set the trap. We quickly make a noose out of the rough rope we brought. We fling it over a tree and lay the loop close to the ground. Then make a small path with leaves and Sticks that make the path narrow to where the hog will have to go into the noose. We wait and sure enough here comes the hog, she's a fat younger one and that means the meat is good. She follows the path and sure enough windes up in the noose. My brother pulls it right from in the tree which traps her there. I then come out of hiding behind a Bush and give one swift stab of my sword to the heart and she is done for. We have to gut her right there and we do. We keep all the insides to use as bait for other animals. We make are way back home, when we arrive we hand dad the bag as he reminds us that last night was a storm. And that we should go to the beach. Last night there had been a pretty decent storm only a few miles away from the house by the beach, and me and Connor were going to find fulgurite. Fulgurite is the product of when lightning strikes sand. The heat of the lightnight bolt fuses the sand together to make a clear, incredibly beautiful shaped glass. We had gone to look for this stuff since I can remember, even before "the start". We used to do it with our mom, but she was no longer with us.

Our mom died before the start. She died from lung cancer that she had gotten from second hand smoking. My mom had been a big part of my life and I had lost one of my best friends when she died. It took me a few years to get back to myself, and after the start I couldn't be depressed. I had to help my family survive.

When we got to the beach we split up to cover more ground. Usually it was fairly easy to see due to the left over smoke and blackened spots in the tan, wet sand. I went left and he went right. As I walk down the beach I hear Connor yell that he found one and I give him a thumbs up. I keep walking when I see a big boulder than seems to be smoking from far away. I start to jog over to it and when I get close I realize it's not the boulder but something behind it. I walk around to see a hole the size of my bed in the ground. It has all the signs of a folgurite sight but ten times the size the normal diameter. In the center was a small rock, perfectly sphere shaped and glowing white. This Was definitely bizarre. I climb down into the crater and walk up to the rock. It looks like it's almost alive, shaking slightly. I bend down to look closer when my brother yells behind me, "what is that!". He startles me and I trip over myself and fall. My arms touches the rock and it's hot to the touch. Then it rolls into my hand on its own. I'm wondering how It did that when I feel this feeling through my body. It doesn't hurt but feels actually amazing. I feel myself lift off the ground and the rock in my hand turns to dust, white, shiny dust. The dust floats around me for a while then shoots into my mouth and nose. I can't breath for a second and then BOOM! a blast of energy bursts out of me. I see out of the corner of my eye my brother being pushed back by the force. The next thing I know I'm on the ground near the ocean. I use all my strength to push myself up. I look at my reflection in the water and see someone that is not me before PURE white and I pass out.
