The next week, I actually sort of talked to Jacob and didn't completely ignore him like I usually do. I learned that he wasn't half bad. It was a nice change, talking to him, and not ignoring him. He was actually pretty funny and I noticed that when he talks he combs his fingers through his floppy hair. He's not all that bad.
But I obviously can't let him know that I might like him (not like-like)! Then he'll be all like, "I told you so!" and that can not happen. So I need to do everything in my power to make sure that Jacob doesn't find out that I might like him.
After school, I was walking out the doors with Kaylee and Mckenzie. We were laughing about something until Kaylee squealed, pointing at something posted on the door.
I laughed. "What?" I looked at what she was pointing at. It was a poster that read "Hollywood Homecoming Dance! Get your tickets for $15!" My smile faded off of my face. I wasn't really the girl who got dressed up and went dancing all night.
"I really want to get asked by a boy!" Mckenzie said excitedly. Kaylee nodded her head in agreement. I tried to smile, but it came across fake looking. Mckenzie looked at me shocked. "What, you don't want a date, Britt?"
"I don't know if I even wanna go!" I said turning away from the poster. My friends came running towards me.
"Well, if you had to go, who would you wanna ask you to go?" Kaylee asked me. I honestly didn't know the answer to that question. I was about to say Trenton, but then Jacob popped into my mind. Wait, what? Why would Jacob pop into my mind? I don't even like him that way. Right?
"I know who she'd want to go with." said a voice from behind me. I swiveled around to see Jacob behind me smirking. My face grew hot and I avoided his eye contact. Wait, that means that I'm shy around him. I turned my eyes back up at him and stared at him head on. Kaylee and Mckenzie started laughing.
"Yeah right, like Brittany would want to go with you!" said Kaylee cackling.
"Britt can do a million times better than you, Jacob!" said Mckenzie. Jacob's smile faded off of his face and his cheeks reddened.
"Why don't you let Brittany speak for herself." Jacob said, and my friends stopped laughing immediately. Their gaze turned from Jacob to me and it hardened.
"Well Brittany, would you ever go to Hoco with this loser?" asked Kaylee crossing her arms. My stomach tightened into knots. Do I risk being friends with my friends by saying yes? But I don't know if I see myself going to homecoming with Jacob. Everyone looked at me with anticipation in their eyes, especially Jacob.
"Let's go, guys." I mumbled. I started to walk away and Jacob's eyes became glassy and distant. My friends trailed after me. Once we were a good distance away, Kaylee tapped my shoulder.
"Would you actually go with Jacob?" she asked me shocked. I smiled.
"'Course not. I don't like Jacob." I said. They smiled, satisfied with my answer. They didn't press the matter anymore and once I got home, I texted Jacob (we had swapped numbers).
Me: Sorry about my friends back there. They shouldn't have done that.
Later, Jacob texted me.
Sagittarius: It's fine, I'm used to it...
I frowned at his text. He's used to it? What, being turned down by a girl or being teased by any and everyone? I turned off my phone and shook my mind clear of him.
Next week...
It's the Friday night of the homecoming football game! I was going with all my friends and we were all going to dress in black leggings and our school's sweaters along with a matching blue beanie with our school logo on it. We all drove to the football stadium and stood at the very top row of bleachers. All around us were grades of all sorts. Everyone was wearing blue, or school color, and even though the game hadn't even started yet, there was lots of cheering and talking going on already.
"How exciting is this!" Maya said shaking my arm. I smiled at her.
"And can you believe the Homecoming dance is already next Friday?!" shouted Cherrlyn over the shouts of the seniors standing in front of us.
I nodded my head.
"Trenton needs to hurry up and ask you!" said Abby frowning. I blushed. All of my friends were convinced that Trenton was going to ask me to the dance, but I wasn't sure. We're just friends that I know of. But Abby was asked last week, and so was Maya and Kaylee.
But then there's Jacob. What if he asks me? Do I say yes? I mean, I'm not desperate for a date or anything. But would I actually reject him if he asked me?
"Hey, Britt!" said a voice to my left. I looked over and saw Trenton. He was wearing the same sweater as me and jeans. He looked really cute and I smiled at him.
"Hey!" I said. I hugged him and we stayed there for a while.
Then he whispered in my ear, "You look great. Can we talk?" His breath tickled my ear. We separated and I nodded. He took my right hand we walked down the bleachers. I looked back and saw Abby looking at me confused. I shrugged my shoulders and then turned back around as Trenton and I walked down the bleachers.
He lead me to under the bleachers and took my other hand. I smiled up at him.
"So, what's this all about?" I asked him grinning. He grinned back and looked down.
"Since we've been friends for a while now, I thought maybe it would be nice to be more than that..." he said looking me in the eye. I blushed.
"You mean, like date?" I asked him. He nodded.
"Is that crazy?" he asked me. I laughed.
"No, that sounds amazing to me." I said smiling. He looked relieved and smiled back.
"Great, then what would really make this perfect is if you would come to homecoming with me?" he asked. He let go of my hands and dug in his pocket for something. He pulled out a small box. Then he got down on one knee and opened the box. I gasped. It was a ring with a Turquoise gem in the center.
I nodded my head. "Yes, of course!" I said bouncing on my toes. He got up and took my left hand. He slipped the ring onto my ring finger and it fit perfectly. It glimmered when the light struck it and it was beautiful. I sighed. I looked into his sky blue eyes. "It's beautiful."
"Just like you." he said. Then, without warning, he leaned in and kissed me. I was shocked, but I kissed back. After a few seconds we parted and I smiled at him. Then he took my left hand, his fingers brushing over the ring, and we walked back up to our spot on the bleachers. But I couldn't help but think about how when he kissed me, I felt no spark.
The first half of the game, well I don't really know what happened. I was really only talking to Trenton and my friends, not really paying attention to the game. Then, halftime got interesting.
The band went out onto the field and starting playing their song they had rehearsed. Then, all of the sudden the scoreboard went out. So did all of the surrounding streetlights. A few people screamed and everyone started talking. I looked at Trenton in the dim light worried. He looked back confused.
"Don't worry everyone, we will figure out what the problem is momentarily." said a booming voice into a microphone. Then a new voice greeted our ears.
"Hello, everyone." said a familiar voice. I looked down at the field and saw a small figure standing center field. He had grabbed the microphone from the principal, which was a bad idea. "Sorry, this is all my fault, the power and everything." Another bad idea. "I did this because I wanted to ask a big question to someone out in the audience."
I looked around and wondered why the principal hadn't gotten the guy who took the mic away from him. It was all weird.
"Will you come to homecoming with me, Brittany Gavins?" said the person into the mic. My head swung around to face the field. I then realized who's voice it was and who had taken away the mic from the principal and who had made the power blackout.
Jacob Sartorius.
I could feel everyone's eyes on me, especially Trenton's and my friends. I wished at that moment I could just disappear right there and then, not have to deal with the awkwardness in the air. By now, everyone single eye was on me and everyone was waiting for an answer.
