"God Riley, you're such a baby, just talk to him," Marsha scoffed and turned away from me to wave at the boys at the back of the us ,"Boys aren't monsters, they don't bite....hard," She sent me a wicked smile and turned right back around. I sighed and looked out the bus window. She didn't try to be quiet as she practically shouted I was too frightened to talk to the guy behind us, Jared.
If only I wasn't to shy to talk to anyone besides Marsha, and she only kept me around for my smarts. And during the summer when she was forced to go to summer camp with me, she kept me around to look better. It wasn't hard.
The shadow of the bus moved when we passed mail boxes and when the curbs ended. Some little ones squealed at one of their groups counselors. I glanced at Marsha again and she flipped her hair as she leaned in to whisper in some guy’s ear.
When I leaned against the window somebody tapped me on the head,"Hey Keller, pass this to Marsha. She seems a bit occupied, but just...don't look," Jared passed me a note that I thought would probably be from some jock at the back. I smiled and he grinned right back before putting his headphones on.
I was tempted to look at it, but I just clenched it in my hand. When she turns around I'll give it to her. I sent her one more look before putting my head back on the seat and closing my eyes. A couple seconds later I was out like a light.
"YO KELLER! GET OFF THE BUS!" I jolted up and looked around a bit fazed. Where am I? Oh, right, the bus. The person who had called me clambered down the steps, leaving me alone on the bus. I slept the whole ride? I stretched before getting up and hopping off the bus.
Everyone was talking with each other as if they hadn't just been at the beach with everyone on a camp trip. I scratched my head before trudging toward my cabin I shared with three other girls. Sometimes being at a summer camp for a whole month overnight was pretty cool to meet people...if you weren't me.
"Marsha, you here?" I opened my hand, realizing that I still had the paper in my hand. I stepped inside and was a little relieved I didn't see anyone. Before I changed, I dropped the note on my bunk, which was above Marsha's. The two other girls were best friends, which I guess what Marsha and I were, but I didn't really talk to them much. They liked to hang out by the volleyball court.
I grabbed my clothes and headed to the bathroom, laying out how the camp looked in my mind. When you entered, there was a big fire pit where we gather around for s'mores on Fridays and sang sing along after dinner. Than the director's building next to the mess hall. Off to the left was the girl’s cabin with counselor cabins in the middle. It's the same with the boy's cabins, but to the left. Then the lake is down at the end with the volleyball court to the side.
I pulled my bathing suit off and put my pajamas on. Some people like me just went to dinner with their sleeping clothes, but people like Marsha just put on another coat of lip-gloss. I twisted my hair up in a ponytail and walked out to the room. Sam and Tori, the other girls, walked in and waved at me before returning to their conversation.
I walked to my bed and climbed up the ladder. When I flopped on my bed, I pulled out the note. I could just peek-
No Riley, you don't want to betray your best friend.
She never does anything for you Riley, just look at it.
Would your mom approve?
"Shut UP!" I stopped, appalled. I looked at Tori and Sam who had stopped their conversation stared at me with surprised looks plastered on their faces.
"Oh, oh not you. I was just....talking to myself," A smiled at them and they just nodded while looking at my like I needed special help. Maybe I do. I lay back down and stared at the folded note. It was probably just another guy asking her to go out with them. Sometimes I got stuck between sending them notes, probably just like this one.
