“Jan Carlo, where is my left slipper?” shouted Joan to his little brother on a Thursday summer twilight. “I don’t know, Joan. Go and search for it yourself. I’m busy,” Jan Carlo shouted back. He was very busy playing his favorite game on Facebook. He was winning and he will let no one disturb him. Not until Joan pushed the screen of the laptop down.
BOOM!
“WHAT DID YOU DO?! I’m almost there!” cried Jan Carlo with irritation on his face. Disappointed, he immediately stood up and headed in the kitchen to get a glass of water.
“Help me find my slipper and I’ll buy you a lollipop. I’ll buy also for your friends.”
“I don’t have any friends.”
“Oh, I see,” said Joan with a sad face, “It is because you just keep on playing online games. You almost lived in that virtual world.”
“Oh, Joan. Don’t blame me. In the first place, you don’t allow me to go out the house. And second, I don’t like the kids around here!” shouted Jan Carlo.
Joan was shocked so she replied, “What’s with the tone?” She suddenly noticed a tear fell from his brother’s right eye. “Why are you crying? What did I do?” she said, slowly approaching Jan Carlo.
But Joan was shocked and froze in her place when Jan Carlo yelped in rage. “GO FIND YOUR USELESS SLIPPER ON YOUR OWN SO YOU CAN PUT IT IN YOUR USELESS FOOT!” The crying of the boy was intense. It made the girl startled. “I was having real lot of fun playing and you interrupted me. You ruined my game, YOU RUINED EVERYTHING! Now, I WILL RUIN YOUR USELESS LIFE!” shouted Jan Carlo an in an instant, he grabbed a kitchen knife lying on the kitchen counter, still with bits of raw meat on it.
“Wait, what are you doing? MOM! DAD!”shouted Joan as she stepped back but was cornered on the wall. There was no response from her parents because they went shopping for vegetables for their dinner, the dinner Joan was afraid to miss. She rushed outside the kitchen when she found a chance and headed to the telephone in the living room.
She was trying to call her mom but she was too late because his brother, with rage in his eyes stabbed the telephone. “You didn’t even think of me! You always think for your own sake. I was winning! I WAS WINNING! Now one thing’s for sure. You’ll lose, and I’ll WIN!” said Jan Carlo, as he retrieved the knife.
Jan Carlo was about to stab her in the head, but was avoided when Joan picked up the telephone and hit it on his head. The impact was so hard; blood started gushing out of his head.
“You have no mercy on me, Joan!”
“YOU’RE THE ONE WHO HAS NO MERCY! YOU’RE CRAZY! It is just a game. Just forget it!”
But he didn’t listened to her. He started to charge into Joan but she managed to sprint past out of the room. She ran helplessly towards the stairs then headed in her room. She immediately locked her doorknob then started crying as she sat against the wall.
It took her a minute before she stopped crying. She put her left ear against the door to listen. No sign of a human.
I wish I can call Mom, she said to herself. She remembered immediately her cellular phone lying in her bed. She rushed to get her phone then get back in her position so she can hear if there were footsteps.
She dialed her Mom’s number but she can’t be reached. She kept on dialing but it was no use. Mom, answer the phone, she pleaded. But she remembered her dad so she did the same. She dialed his number and luckily, his father answered.
“Joan?”
"Dad, come back home. JAN CARLO’S GETTING INSANE!”
“What? What are you saying?”
He heard a door creaking over the line.
“He’s—“ Then he heard a loud thump.
“Hello?” asked her father curiously.
“Hi dad! How are you?”
“Oh, Jan Carlo, we’re good! What are you doing there?”
“Oh, I’m fine.”
“Dad, I won!”
“Really? That’s great! I know you’re good on slashing zombies and things. I’ve seen you playing on your laptop.”
“Yes, dad. I know I am good on slashing things.”
