I sit up in my chair and yawn.
"Chief, there has been a robbery and a homicide."
"Bob, how many times have I told you, don't interrupt my naps" I say jokingly.
"Chief, this is serious." Bob starts talking again. "We don't have much information on the robbery but we do on the murder. So, last night someone sent in some footage of a man getting thrown into a dumpster."
"That's sanitary."
"Take it seriously," he says. But more harshly this time.
"Fine, what's my part in this case."
"Do you not remember? We assigned you chief two days ago. Do me a favor and try to keep your job, you're only twenty-two."
"Oh, right. So now I have the right to participate in everything. Great." I pause and straighten out my police star on my jacket. "What time?" I ask him.
"Seven thirty-two. By the Steak-n-Shake on exit 37." I walk over to the desktop computer and pull up the footage from last night. First the screen is black, then I see a body. I pause the screen and zoom in. There are stab wounds on their chest and all over their arms.
"Bob!" I yell. He jogs over to where I stand.
"The victim has wounds all over their self. And the blood hasn't clotted, so he probably finished whoever that is off right there. You know, before the camera's started filming."
"You coming?"
"Where?"
"A little investigation."
"Alright" I say lazily "I'm coming." I stretch my arms out and start to walk out the door with Bob.
We walk out of the building and into the car, almost.
"Who's driving?" i ask.
"Isn't it obvious, it's my car. I'm driving."
"Fine have it your way."
We arrive at the crime scene and there's no body, but there are signs of blood.
"Alright our victim has definitely been here" Bob says in a hurry. "I am going to call the CIS To get blood samples to identify our victim. He takes a vacuum like tool and sucks up some of the blood off the tar into the test tube to analyze it.
"This is our evidence, unless we find something more important. Somewhat like the knife the suspect used to stab the victim."
"I think I would know that. Being the chief in all." Bob rolls his eyes at me.
"Okay, I've had enough homicide for today. I'm going home, see you tomorrow," he pauses "and keep me posted about the blood test results." He starts off towards his car.
"Hey! Wait! I need a ride!"
"Oh right, thought you could handle walking home, you know, since you're the chief in all." He grins. I run to catch up with him. We get inside the car and start back towards the police station.
The car comes to a stop and I get out. "Thanks, see you soon" Bob grins and presses down on the pedal. I start walking towards my house.
I live in the middle of town where my favorite donut shop is located. So of course I stop to buy a donut. I walk up to the display and choose a donut and pay my $3.95. The lady hands me my donut.
"Have a good day ma'am."
"You too" I wave back to her and exit the shop. As soon I walk out the door I open my mouth and get ready to enjoy the deliciousness of this pink frosted donut when suddenly someone bumps me from behind and my donut is now face down on the concrete.
"Are you freaking kidding me?! I paid so much dang money for that donut."
"Well, I'm sorry, but I don't think $3.95 is that pricey" says the man that made me drop my donut.
"Go in there and buy me a new one."
"How bout' I buy two, one for me and you."
"Do you not realize I'm just going to walk out on you after you buy me the donut?"
"Not until now."
"Well if you walk out after I buy you the donut you'll have to go out with me tonight at eight o'clock for a movie," he says grinning like he was blackmailing me.
He walks in and buys two donuts, comes out and stares out at the cityscape. Puzzled, I take the donut out of his hand and write my number on a piece of paper I brought with me and leave it in his hand. I start walking to my apartment then shout behind me
"Pick me up at seven-thirty!" I look back and he is grinning at me.
I reach my apartment and unlock the door, it's been a long day. I lay down on my bed and inhale some air. Maybe I'll make it out alive. Should I go anyway? This is one of the few dates I've ever had in a long time. I open I my closet doors and pull out black pumps, and a silky silver dress to bring out my eyeshadow.
A few hours pass when suddenly a car horn honks in front of the building. I stick my head out of the window and wave. It's him, the donut shop guy. I hadn't even learned his name? I hadn't noticed. How did he find out where I live? Did he go through my personal records?
I slip into my dress and put on my pumps and start out the door. I climb two flights of stairs and through the front door.
" Hey." I say with a smile. He opens his black cadillac door and I climb in. "Anyways, where are we going?" He twists the keys and puts his foot on the gas pedal.
"Hoppy's Diner."
"Classy" i say sarcastically.
"Whatever you say," I realize i hadn't asked him his name yet.
"I have a question."
"Have at it."
"What is your name? I hadn't asked you at the donut shop so i figured, why not now." He hesitates for a moment,
"Eden Grey"
"Interesting," just then the Eden slams on the brakes and the car skids. "What the heck did you do?" I shriek.
"The cops."
"What?" He is on the verge of screaming.
"The cops!" He starts the car up again and pushes his foot down hard on the gas pedal.
