I look back and see glaring red and blue lights following our every turn. The car skids down an alley, knocking trash cans, dirt, and whatever else is there, out of the way. I'm having trouble staying calm.
"Why are we running, actually driving, away from the cops?!" I yell.
"You'll eventually find out." Eden seems to be staying calm. I look at Eden, it's like I am trying to read his mind, but the only thing that comes to mind is he is running from someone. Why else would we be driving eighty miles per hour through the city.
"Eden!" He stays silent.
"Eden!" I scream. I have never been in a police chase before, even though I'm chief. I don't know what to expect.
"What do you want!" He screams back. We both seem angry and tense.
"Take me to my apartment!" I can barely hear myself between all the skidding and screaming.
The rest of the ride is almost silent except for the car tires skidding every once and awhile, I think we lost the police though. We reach my apartment ten minutes later.
"Thanks," I pause "for the lovely dinner," I say while walking back to my apartment. He holds his hand up, like some kind of gesture.
"Wait," he motions me back over to the car. I look back over my shoulder. "I'm sorry." I'm confused, why is he apologizing? I'm the one who caused all of this. If i hadn't been there, none of this would've happened.
"Why are you apologising to me?"
"I'm the one who caused this mess, it's my fault." he pauses, i think he is just confused too, he might just be trying to figure out what to say. "and if you never want to see me again, im fine with that." He pushes the key down into the slot.
"Bye Eden." I start down to my apartment, "oh, and meet me at my apartment tomorrow night. But this time, i'm driving. Don't forget eight o'clock sharp!" I gesture a wave towards him. I look back at Eden before I walk into the building, he is grinning, so am I. He must be stoked.
I take my apartment key out of my purse.
"Push, turn, out," I mumble. The door clicks and I turn the doorknob. I go into my bedroom and into my closet.
"What to wear, what to wear." I grab a black long sleeved blouse off the hanger and some ripped skinny jeans out of my cubby. I flatten the clothes out and lay them on the floor next to my bed.
I hop into my bed and relax. It's all over, now i have to do it again tomorrow.
I toss and turn during the night, i dream about what the case is going to involve tomorrow. Blood tests? Then, i wake up.
"Oh my god. The tests." I spring out of my bed and slip into the clothes that i laid out. I walk swiftly down the hallway and grab my black leather coat off the coat rack. I start out the door and turn around to lock it. I climb down the apartment stairs quickly and focused. I look down at the tile in the lobby, and collide into someone.
"Oh sor--" i pause and look up at the face. " Bob?" i sound a little too surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to see you actually."
"Oh, why?"
"I checked in at the lab last night," I start to get nervous and my palms are starting to get clammy, "they said that no one had come in after I dropped you off at the office building." I try sound like I hadn't remembered to go.
"What... I hadn't noticed."
"Come on Shelly," I flinch "don't be stupid."
"Fine, I got up early so I could turn in the tests."
"I knew it."
"What," now I'm lost.
"I told you not to be stupid!" He is starting to raise his voice.
"I'm not!" I start to yell too.
"Shut up."
"What?" I say whisper.
"Shut up. People are staring." He says tensely.
"You shut up."
"Look, I don't have time for you to catfight with me right now." I take my fist and hit the side of his jaw. I turn around and jog back up the stairs to my apartment.
I take the key and jam it into the keyhole. I jog back over to my bed and lay down on top of it. I just want to forget the past fifteen minutes of my day.
I fall asleep again and don't plan to wake up until one.
I hear my alarm coming from my phone. I rub my eyes until the blurriness wears away. I look at the time and groan.
"Ugh. One o'clock." I grab my phone and turn the alarm sounds off.
