This "thing" about giving back, or sharing, or the golden rule, pretty much doesn't apply here at wattpad. We don't give, to receive. Quite brass, or you may say mean, but we have to suck it up. It's the truth. We can't live here if the least we can do is to exchange a thing for another.
Think about it. If you're the type who is always vying for a follow-back, with a promise you will follow them in return, you won't last. What will happen? For every read you get, that's the amount of stories you are promising to finish. That, if you're really true to your word. Because that's what you're also expecting to the people you've made the deal with. To finish your work. To read every update. To vote and comment about it.
But that's not gonna happen. They will just read that one part, or probably not read it at all. Besides, you wouldn't even know. Unless you also made a deal about an exchange of comments or something. But nah-ah. Considering it will work for you at the genesis of your wattpad life, it won't sustain you. You can't read a million of other stories in return of your million-reads dream. You can't.
And it won't feel as a good as those legit reads. Those organic reads that you'll get if you don't vie for reads. Because readers will just come. You don't need to tell them to. You don't need to sink yourself into a whole new low. Because what will you tell yourself at night? That your readers aren't real. They're just there because you asked for them to read it. You made a deal about it.
Same goes with followers. If you have many followers as much as your following, it ain't real. You can't follow a thousand people and read their work in a lifetime. If you just wanna make friends, I think other social media sites are available for that.
If you want reads, it will come. If you want followers, it will come.
Just let them come, is all.
On another note, there's a lot more important issues you need to focus on. Apart from these deals you moon over, there's this one critical thing your attention needs pining for.
You know what is? It's our story. Improve. Improve. Improve your story.
And when your story becomes so so good, all the other issues would be pale in comparison.
Because a read for a read and a follow for a follow has simply no reason.
