"Oh come on mom! Don't make me go out there now. The winds blowing and i think a storm could be coming any second now!" Sam begged his mother not to make him go out, for it had been a long windy day and everyone suspected terrible weather that night. "You wanted that dog, so you have to go and walk him!" Sam's mother, Lauren, shouted back at him while handing him his jacket and the leash for the dog. Sam sighed,"Fine. Come here Max!" Max came running in the living room, tail wagging, waiting for the leash to snap on to his collar. As Sam snapped it into place and began to open the door into the dark windy night, he heard his mother call out to him. "Be back in 10 minutes darling. Food should be ready by then." Sam heard the click of the door telling him he'd shut it. He began to walk down their home made dirt drive-way. His family lived way out in the country, away from everyone else. At times it was very lonely, but for the most part it was very soothing and calm. It was a fall October night, and the air was crispy and cold. Every step Sam took he would hear the crunching of the leaves underneath his feet. But he began to think that he heard more crunching in the woods, way off in the distance. Stopping in his trace to listen, he heard it getting further and further. With all his attention focused on what was in the woods, Max had the opportunity to run off, jerking the leash out of Sam's hands. Max began to run to the spot where Sam had heard the noise, barking along the way, ignoring Sam's desperate cries trying to call him back. "Max! Please! Come back!" Without hesitation, Sam ran off following Max. He knew if he was to show back up at home without the dog, he'd have some serious explaining to do. Slowly running out of breath, Sam kept chasing Max. He kept calling his name hoping that he'd listen and come back, but Max just kept running. It was like the dog had to get whatever it was he was chasing. But as Sam chased and called for his dog, he saw shadows in the corner of his eyes. They were running; not beside Sam, but behind him. That's when it hit him. Max wasn't trying to chase something....he was trying to get away from something. Sam's heart began to beat faster with every step he took, he'd never felt this scared in his life. He was trying to be careful of his stepping's because he knew that one little mistake could cost him his life. Even though his mind kept telling him he had to run faster, he had to run further, he knew he would soon run out of breath. Eyes watering with terror, he began to feel something grab hold of his ankles. Knowing he couldn't run any faster or else he'd use all his energy before he even made it close to escaping, he tried to shake it off. But the instant his foot came off the ground to do so, something pulled it, yanking Sam back. Tears rolling down his cheeks, he watched his dog keep running as blackness began to cover everything he could see. Sam began screaming out for anyone to come help, but deep down he knew it was no use, no one knew where he was; no one was going to come for his aid. He heard the breeze in his ear, before he lost consciousness.
Lauren had just gotten the cake out of the oven, she was going to surprise Sam with it, for tomorrow would he would officially be 9. Humming to a new tune she had heard over the weekend, she heard scratching on the door. She went to open the door, but as she did confusion hit her. As she looked down, all she saw was Max there with half of his leash on. But as she looked up, she saw her husband in the car that was now soaked in red blood. At first she thought he had simply hit a deer, but as she looked closer, she saw that one of Sam's shoes were caught in the dent of the car. Before she had time to even react, one of Sam's fingers rolled from underneath the car where it had fell. She began to scream, as she knew what had happened to her son.
