Years ago, something truly tragic happened to the Rivers and the Collins family, more specifically to Maeve Rivers and Naomi Collins, the two teenage daughters of both families.
They were involved in an attack, a hostage attack. These two girls, through all the tension, grief and pain going on around them as they laid on their stomachs in that office room of that bank managed to keep each other calm, their fingers locked together tightly, Naomi's thumb rubbing soothing patterns into her best friend's numb palm. Maeve holding on to her best friend as silent tears ran down her cheeks.
Naomi had always been a positive, bright girl, who seemed to find a good in every bad.
Maeve was frightened. Simple as.
Now these girls' were polar opposites but that was what kept them together. Their differences was the glue that kept them so close, so unbreakable and so secure. Society found their friendship a mystery, people wanted their friendship, they wanted to have someone in their life who was so different, personality wise, that they became similar. Maeve thanked her stars everyday for sending down, probably the brightest one, in the form of a human to watch over her.
And all it took was a minute, sixty seconds exactly to ruin it all. And as that trigger was being pulled, all Maeve could muster was a "Goodbye, I love you" but those words didn't bring her best friend back, no, instead it gave her an empty feeling in her heart. Those words morphed into an earthquake and ripped through her world because the key, the most important figure in her life was gone, departed.
Till today, after the attack three years ago, that empty feeling has remained locked in her heart. No one can fill it, no sympathy was ever enough to put a geniune smile back on Maeve's lips because as she watched her best friend leave her, that smile, that happiness, left her too and replaced itself with emptiness, just like Naomi had left her body - empty, lifeless, dead.
In response to what had happened that gloomy afternoon, Maeve took to silence as her last resort. Selectively mute was what she had become.
