Darkness was all Ally could see. She heard the mewling of other kits nearby, but besides that, there was nothing.
Then she felt it: a slight nudge. Ally made a small whimpering noise and rolled over.
"It will be alright, my little munchkin," meowed a soft, steady voice in her ear. It was her mother, but Ally had no way of knowing that. All she knew was that it was safe. She could just feel it in her heart.
Later on, Ally would realize that her heart was not to be trusted.
Ally opened her mismatched eyes. She looked around, confused. Where was her mother? The other kits?
And then she remembered.
Struck with overwhelming sadness, Ally got up, stretched, and quickly groomed herself. Then she ran the length of the alley (otherwise known as her home) and blinked as she watched the humans who lived here prepare for another long day of selling and buying. She looked around for the plate of food one of the smaller ones sometimes left for her, but found nothing. She wasn't too surprised by this. She hadn't had anything besides insects and crow food for over two moons. Maybe the occasional mouse. But those things were as bony as her.
Ally turned around and headed straight for her original resting place. Maybe she could find something back there. She sure wouldn't find anything out there, by the feet of those humans.
After a while of searching, Ally sat to wash her paws. She washed her paws more than was absolutely necessary. It was a habit that she had gotten from her mother. She didn't know that, though, so she continued to wash.
Then, when the wind was blowing in the right direction, Ally caught a whiff of something. Something delicious. She stopped, mid lick. It took her a few moments to recognize the scent.
Mouse.
Very, very, slowly, Ally put down her paw and swiveled her head to the left. There it was. A big, plump grey mouse, just sitting at the end of the alley.
Ally's mouth began to water, and her head began fantasizing about how splendid that mouse would taste in her strong jaws. She shook the thought away. Now was not the time to be overly confident. She needed all of her focus in order to catch her prey.
Soundlessly, Ally began to stalk towards it. The unfortunate creature had a rather large seed in it's paws, and was nibbling at it, completely unaware that it's own demise was literally heading right towards it. Ally was about a foot away when it realized that things were not quite right. Dropping the seed, it scurried away.
But Ally wasn't going to let it off the hook that easy. You see, a mouse was rare in these parts, and a plump one was even rarer. Running faster than she had ever run before, she quickly caught up with it, scooped it up in her paws, and threw it high in the air. It landed on the ground with a loud thump. It tried to run, but Ally effortlessly snagged it in her claws and dragged it back towards her. The mouse squealed and struggled, but one bite from Ally and it was dead.
Ally picked up the lifeless body in her mouth and jogged back to the alley. She licked her whiskers, anticipating the meal.
She thanked her ancestors for the food, and the mouse for sacrificing it's life for hers (although certainly not willingly).
Ally crouched down and opened her jaws to eat when. . .
She heard footsteps. Or, to be more precise, paw steps.
