“Goodbye Daddy”

(In Memory of those lost in the Sandy Hook Shooting)

It was 11 days before Christmas on that dreadful day.

Kids all walked to the bus stop with parents in hand,

One with a new candy cane locked in her hand.

The sound of children all gathering around,

Laughing and playing though she stayed mute.

Stood by her father she didn’t want to move.

The bus pulled up moments later.

She looked up at her father and hugged him tight.

She said “goodbye Daddy” and she ran on the bus,

Just out of sight.

Her father thought it was odd,

The way she told him made it stick to his heart.

Though everything seemed normal,

Darkness filled the air.

He had no idea that would be the last time he would see bows in his daughter’s hair.

Around 9:31 AM, all time stood still.

Darkness stood close in sight.

He heard on the news of a shooting nearby.

As soon as they said “school” somehow he knew.

His six year old daughter wouldn’t be coming home from School.

All the pain in the world was nothing compared to this.

Losing a daughter was something he never thought he would have to witness.

A few days later he spoke at her funeral.

He said, “Somehow I think she knew.”

He remembered the look in her eyes before she got on that bus.

How she said “Goodbye Daddy” struck his heart once more.

In the end there was only one thing to say.

“Goodbye Angel. I’ll see you again one day.”
