According to the dictionary definition of 'Friends', it is when a person is attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard. Of course, that isn't very hard to understand. It is simply a person liking another or when there is no hostility between them. But, how do you know when you feel more than just affection for them? Your feelings have grown from being 'just friends'? The line between friendship and love is very broad yet, at the same time, thin. And, what about when hostility develops? When you've fallen out? What then? See, friendship is a simple yet complex thing. That's why it's better to not have any friends at all.
"Saoirse, you're going to be late for school if you don't get moving!" Mother hollered.
My name is Saoirse Allaway. I'm a 16 year old Scottish girl who recently moved to America due to my Father's job. Just to note, I am NOT looking forward to my first day in school. Stepping out of the bathroom, I threw on whatever clothes I could find. Walking down the stairs, my mum frowned at my sluggish mannerisms.
"Smile would 'ya? Ain't gonna find any friends there if you keep your pretty face in a scowl all the time."
I snorted as I grabbed my backpack before stepping out the door.
"I'm off." I yelled before slipping into an alley to take a small detour to school.
...Which would have made me happy had it not proved to be a failure. I arrived sooner than I had expected which therefore led me to wandering around the campus in hopes of finding a place that was not filled with people either flirting, exchanging salivas or just plain rubbing it in people's faces that they're either popular or have friends.
It was sickening to be surrounded by all this. You'd think that it was already Valentines! I took a glance at one of the couples eating each other's faces off and shuddered. If this wasn't even Valentines, I'm scared to know what Valentines here is.
Moving on, I trudged towards a secluded area in garden and sighed in relief as I slid down to sit beside a tree. Rustling sounded from above me as the leaves fell to the ground. Not thinking much of it, I rested my head and took out my phone from my bag before putting on my earphones.
Just when I was about to listen to my sweet music, I heard a snap reverberate throughout the garden.
The rest happened in a blur. All I knew was that a heavy weight had descended on me from the heavens and is now currently crushing me into a perfect pancake.
Hair tickled my face as the sound of jumbled up words flooded into my ear. Fortunately, the furry monster soon stood up and left me to gather my breath. My vision focused and soon, I saw a concerned face staring at me. "Oh my gosh... Thank goodness you're alright!" The unknown girl practically screamed at me, thick British accent coating her words.
"See, this is why we told you not to fidget too much Kat..." Another one muttered. She seemed like the 'Mother' of the group.
"C'mon Eun, at least none of them got hurt." Chimed a tan, Asian-looking boy. I opened my mouth to speak but was thankfully saved by the school bell.
"Oh, there goes the bell. We'd better hurry," Chirped the furry monster.
I dumped all my stuff into my bag and practically dashed out of the scene like a frightened animal. Crossing my fingers as I ran to class, I prayed to the heavens that I wouldn't have to see them again.
... Or so I did but it appears that I have just jinxed myself. Since I'm transferring in the middle of their school year, I had to be the oddball that introduces themselves in front of the ENTIRE class. Do you know how frightening and humiliating that is?! What if they just suddenly started booing at you or throwing tomatoes or just downright yelling at you to 'Go to he' – Ahem. I apologize. I seem to have let my imagination run wild again.
Back to the point. The whole class stared at me with goldfish eyes. Why are they staring at me like that? Have they never seen a transfer student before that they must stare at me like an Alien who came from Mars? Among the horde of students, I saw 5 familiar faces. Furry Monster was looking at me and pointing at her hair while Mummy was staring at me with a sympathetic smile. The other 3 boys however looked like they were trying hard to contain their laughter which made them looked like inflated helium balloons.
The teacher nudged me gently and asked me to introduce myself.
"S-Saoirse Allaway. I-I'm from Scotland." I I mentally kicked myself for stuttering. That, and the fact that my statements sounded more like questions.
The teacher seemed to think that I have more to add and just cleared her throat awkwardly when she realized that seemed to not be the case.
"Well then Saoirse, would you please sit on the empty chair behind Eun?" Mummy raised her hand to indicate where I was to sit.
Shuffling towards my seat, I stared at the windows and caught a glimpse of my reflection.
Oh.
No wonder they were staring.
I plopped down my seat and began to take out the bits and pieces of twigs and leaves stuck in my hair, prolly thanks to the incident with Furry Monster. Not long after, I had a bunch of leaves and twigs pooled up at my desk.
Hurrah, Hurrah...
Groaning gently, I propped my head up with my hand and stared blankly ahead.
I think that this year would be a lot more hectic than I thought it'd be...
