LANDON•

" I do, I most certainly do." I said to her as I looked into those beautiful pair of grey eyes. Those grey eyes had been the place I loved seeing the most.. right from when I was just 14 years old.

The Messners' had moved into the house opposite ours when I was only 14 years old. I was quite a shy little lad back then, scared to befriend and approach new people. It was my mother who forced me to initially go to their house to give them a pie that she had baked earlier that morning. I must point out here as to how very reluctant I was to actually go deliver the pie to them ; but I went.

I was crossing the street with all the intentions of turning back and going straight to my room but, before I could execute the intention , I was at the Messners' doorstep and was knocking at their door.

See, the Messners' weren't the friendliest of neighbours anyone could have.. actually, they were the least bit friendly, and quite unruly. They never spoke to the other neighbours and were almost always voluntarily confined to the four walls of their house. Now, coming back to why I had those intentions of running back home in the back of my head? This was exactly why. My mother has always been this cheerful being who always loved making friends and loved helping people out and that is exactly why she had baked that pie for our new neighbours. Yay.

It took some time for their door to open. I heard a lot of "no, you open the door" "no, you" from behind that oak door when suddenly it was open by this girl, a year younger than I am, whom I've never seen in my entire life. Behind her, Mrs. Messner came into my vision and she seemed worried looking at the back of the girl who opened the door for me.

"U-uh, my mother b-baked this pie for you'll. We stay r-right opposite you'll." Is all that I could manage to say to Mrs. Messner and the girl.

"Go in, darling. Go to your room. I'll be there in a minute." Said Mrs. Messner in hushed tones while she gently pushed the little girl into the living room. "Oh, thank you. I really appreciate that. Thank your mother for me will you?"

I was about to turn around and run back home when Mrs. Messner called out to me- boy, what's your name?

"Landon Craigson."
I replied while turning around and that was when I saw those grey eyes. The eyes belonged to the girl who had opened the door for me. She was now standing a few inches behind her mother, staring at me. And then, I went home.

I went straight up to my room and laid down on my bed. I wondered why I hadn't seen the girl with the grey eyes before. I had seen Mr. and Mrs. Messner and I'd seen their twins- Keith and Brooklyn. Brooklyn was the girl and Keith, the boy and I thought that they were the only children they had.

The girl with the grey eyes, she seemed to intrigue me to quite an extent now. I kept seeing the Messners go about their daily routine , I saw each one of them. But, I never saw the grey eyed girl.

When Summer break ended I learned that Keith and Brooklyn Messner , who were just a year senior to me, had been enrolled in the same school as me.

I wouldn't deny the fact that I felt happy when I saw the Messner twins there. I thought that I could finally see the girl whose thoughts had occupied most of my mind the entire break. But, she wasn't here with them.

It didn't feel right for me to ask them who the grey eyed girl I saw was.. so that day after school I went home and instead asked my mother about her.
"Mom, how well do you know the Messners?"
I have seen my mother talk to Mrs. Messner quite often and hence deduced that she would know everything about them.
"I know quite a lot about them, Lan. Why are you asking me about them, though?"

"Uh well I was wondering about something. Umhh-"

"Well, go on. Ask me what you have to."

"Okay, do you know about the girl who might be a year younger to me who stays in their house?"

"A girl? The only girl who stays with the Messners is their daughter Brooklyn. She's a year older to you. Is she the girl you're asking me of?"

I was very puzzled now. Why was it that I never saw the grey eyed girl after that day when I went over to the Messners' house. Why was it that I never saw her after that. Why was it that even my mum didn't know about her.

"No , mom. I'm a little tired. I'm going to sleep for a while, kay?" I replied to her question as I ran up the stairs. This girl seemed even more than a mystery to me now.

After all, my mother did not know the Messners quite well.

*

That weekend the Messners seemed to be in a typically good mood. Everyone except Mrs. Messner. I told my mum about this and she called her over along with Keith and Brooklyn.

"Hey, Laurenn come over for tea with the kids."
My mother called out to her while they were going into the house.

"Oh, no not today Rosie. Some other for sure, okay?
Said Laurenn as she kindly waved off my mum's offer for tea.

"Mom mom, let's go over to Mrs. Craigsons' house. We wanna play with Landon." , the twins squealed and pleaded to their mother.

" Okay okay, alright. We'll go. But-"
"Yay"
" but first, go freshen up."

In about fifteen minutes, my mum had served the tea on the table in our backyard and our guests had arrived. I felt sad when I saw that they hadn't brought the grey eyed girl along with them.
