Walking outside Katherine was struck by the thought that she probably should have felt the need to draw her clothes closer to her since a nippy, autumn wind was sweeping down through the molting trees.

Everywhere there were leaves, gold, red, orange that crunched under the muted clacking of her chunky heel on the pavement.

Matthias seemed to pay no mind to any of it, his eyes strained on the lights ahead.

His hand held fast to the strap of his backpack as they ventured out into the growing night.

Catching Katherine's eye he changed course abruptly and crossed the street.

Her eyes wondered over his familiar gait, as she stepped off the curb and she suddenly became aware of her own hip swaying canter as she two strode forward purposely.

She staid close behind him and kept a weary eye out.

It was just a case of habit now.

People watched them, closely.

She wondered what they saw when they looked at the pair.

Dark hair, startling eyes, toned and pale.

She wasn't unaware of how they seemed to swarm around them, almost like moths to a light, but then swerved away from getting too close.

It was their humanistic curiosity that kept them close but there was another part of them... Something animalistic and instinctual... that knew without knowing.

Katherine looked over at Matthias and thought about the first time she'd seen him.

Even through her eyes she'd be awestruck, intimidated, and allured.

How evil... fate really was.

They walked along for what seemed a short while the streets growing narrower and shops filled out every side the further they went along.

Soon they came to a bar, sitting in between a huge Kosher specialty food store, and an old comic book store.

What an odd placement.

But Katherine knew why Matthias had chosen this place; the two dark alleyways on either side.

Oh the irony…

They entered without a word.

None needed to be spoken.

She entered after him.

He gait was squared and rigid as he went to sit near a group of men watching a football game, seemingly oblivious to her.

She walked up to the bar, sliding into a seat and waiting for someone to come greet her.

It wasn't long before a male waiter came up and spoke with her.

After she sent him away with a smile and an order, she glanced side way at the man who sat a few feet away from her.

Though no one else could have seen it, Matthias shook his head.

Katherine groaned inwardly.

Damn.

It was one of "those" nights.

Sighing inwardly she rolled her eyes.

Whatever.

Food was food.

When a female bar tender walked by Katherine called out.

"Hey."

The girl looked like she was in her late twenties, carelessness rolled off of her, and she was sporting neither an engagement nor wedding ring.

Katherine didn't think she was very pretty, but she would do. Her tone dropped dramatically, feigning nervousness and worry.
